If you're just going to Europe you can get European travel insurance. Otherwise, you'll need worldwide cover.
Best for a one-off holiday of less than 30 days. You can visit more than one country, as long as you don't return home in-between.
If you go away often then this type policy could be better value. It covers multiple trips for one year.
If you're away for over 30 days, this offers extended cover for longer trips and for multiple countries.
As soon as you've booked your trip.
It will probably be cheaper, and you'll be protected if your holiday is cancelled, say because you are made redundant or someone close to you passes away.
Forgotten about travel insurance? You can still get last-minute travel insurance up to the day of your departure.
No, it's often more expensive to wait to buy travel insurance.
Buying travel insurance immediately after booking your trip will also protect you from cancellations outside of your control, such as supplier failure, bereavement, redundancy, illness, or injury.
The excess is the amount you need to pay towards any insurance claim you make. If you had a policy with a £150 excess and you claimed for lost luggage worth £800, you would pay the £150 and the remaining £650 would be paid by your insurer.
Excess amounts vary by insurer. You can often choose to increase your excess to reduce your policy cost.
Germany offers the most affordable travel insurance, according to our data. The average policy price is just £9.64*.
In contrast, Canada is the most expensive place to visit, from a travel insurance perspective. Average policy prices are £67.12*.
No - most travel insurance policies will have exclusions; you should always check your documents before you go.
If you take out European travel insurance, it won't cover countries outside of Europe. Perhaps more surprisingly, not all policies cover all European countries. Turkey is one that is often excluded.
A lot of worldwide travel policies will exclude the USA, Canada and the Caribbean unless you specify that you want those countries included. (Adding them will probably make the policy price go up, due to the expensive healthcare costs in those locations.)
Almost all travel insurance policies will not cover you for travel to areas the UK government has advised against going to. (You can see a list of these countries on the Foreign Travel Advice website.) You may be able to get specialist high-risk insurance for such places, but it will likely be expensive.
💡 Top tip: Travel insurance policy inclusions and exclusions can vary. Always read your own policy documents thoroughly.

A pre-existing condition is any medical issue for which you had symptoms, medication, medical advice, treatment, or tests before you took out your insurance policy.
This includes disabilities and mental health conditions.
No. If your insurer does not consider your medical condition to be particularly severe, or if it was something that was successfully treated a long time ago, they may cover it for free.
No, insurers don’t usually categorise pregnancy as a pre-existing condition. Your standard travel insurance policy should cover you for medical emergencies related to your pregnancy so long as you haven’t had any prior complications.
However, you may not be covered to travel if you’re more than 37 weeks pregnant - or less if you’re having twins or triplets.
You should tell your insurer all pre-existing medical conditions when you take out travel insurance. Otherwise your insurer can refuse to pay out for claims related to that condition.
If you have already taken out insurance without declaring a condition, you can contact your insurer and ask if your medical condition can be added to your policy. Depending on the specifics of your condition, they may be able to cover it for free or for a small upgrade fee.
If you're in a country with expensive healthcare, getting sick or injured can quickly become a stressful ordeal. Emergency medical treatment claims cost on average £1,750, according to the Association of British Insurers, yet the cost of an average single trip policy costs just £21.36* to cover yourself for any medical emergencies and personal belongings.
Single trip cover is ideal for those who only take one holiday per year, allowing you to fully enjoy your holiday, with the peace of mind of knowing you're protected from unexpected financial burdens.
