Launched in 2010, Insure the Box specialises in providing telematics insurance aimed at young drivers, new drivers, and low-mileage drivers.
A pioneer in the field of telematics, or black box, car insurance, its policies can help drivers who would otherwise pay very high premiums to cut their costs – if the data collected by the smartphone-sized black box fitted to their cars shows that they drive safely.
The data collected includes information about how fast drivers go, how often and when they drive (in the day or at night), and how much time they spend on motorways – allowing Insure the Box to provide “personalised” quotes and offer customers bonus miles when they prove themselves to be safe drivers.
Benefits of having a black box fitted to your car include that it can alert the insurer if you have an accident and be used to trace stolen vehicles.
However, bonus miles aside, Insure the Box policies come with mileage limits of 6,000, 8,000, or 10,000 miles per year. So even though you can buy extra miles, they’re not suitable for all drivers. Other points to note include that there’s no multi-car cover available, you’ll have to pay extra for breakdown cover, and the company’s policies only get three stars from Defaqto.
You can contact Insure the Box via its online portal, which includes a Live Chat service. You can also contact customer services on 0333 103 7894 or by email at service@insurethebox.com.
