What is annual travel insurance?

Designed with frequent travellers in mind, annual travel insurance (also known as a multi-trip travel insurance policy) covers you for several trips abroad in the space of a year.

A policy can save you money and hassle if:

Most annual travel insurance policies cover an unlimited number of trips, but will have a maximum length limit per trip (usually 31 days). For trips over 31 days, you should consider a long-stay travel policy.

How does annual travel insurance work?

Instead of buying a separate round of travel insurance cover every time you set off, a multi-trip policy will cover all of your travel plans for 12 months.

  • Your 12-month period will begin as soon as you take out your annual travel policy

  • Your policy will need to be activated before each trip you take

  • You will be notified of any excesses or exclusions specific to your destination

  • If you need to make a claim, your policy will continue until the end of its term

What does multi-trip travel insurance cover?

🚩 What’s covered can vary depending on your provider and policy. Always check your insurance documents.

  • Covered

    • Emergency medical expenses: Your cover will be able to help you if you need emergency medical treatment or repatriation.

    • Lost, stolen or damaged baggage: Covers your baggage if it gets lost, stolen, damaged, or destroyed.

    • Personal liability: If you are liable for any injuries, loss of possession, or damage to the property of a third party.

    • Travel accommodation for delays and cancellations: In the event of transport problems or other issues. Check your policy to see what cases will be covered.

    • Cancellation cover: If your holiday is cancelled for reasons out of your control, your policy may cover the cancellation costs.

  • Not covered

    • Pre-existing conditions: Unless it's a policy with medical cover, most travel insurance won't cover medical care abroad for pre-existing conditions.

    • Trip duration: While you can make as many trips as you like within 12 months, an annual policy will not cover trips that span over a set limit, usually 31 days.

    • Drugs and alcohol: Any incidents relating to drugs or alcohol are unlikely to be covered, including claims for medical cover.

    • Missed departure: Travel insurance won't reimburse you if you miss your flight because you were late, unless it was due to an emergency.

    • Extreme sports: There are many excursions, water sports, and extreme sports (including winter sports) that your policy may not cover as standard.

What add-ons can I include in my annual travel insurance?

Most insurance providers offer options for you to adjust your policy to get the cover you want.

Some common add-ons you can find are:

  • Cruise cover

Covers multiple countries, cabin confinement, missed departure, unused excursions, and emergency airlift.

  • Golf cover

Covers theft of golf clubs, replacement club hire, non-refundable green fees, personal liability, and damage to a third party.

  • Winter sports cover

Covers skiing/snowboarding, including mountain rescue, piste closures, lost lift pass, avalanche disruption, and activities such as sledging and snowmobiling.

  • Adventure sports cover

Covers adrenaline-inducing activities such as bungee jumping, skydiving, zip-lines, caving, horse riding, and mountaineering.

  • Business travel cover

Covers business equipment, company money, and alternative travel or accommodation for schedule changes.

  • Excess waiver

Standard travel insurance will come with an excess – an excess waiver pays this for you, so you receive 100% of any claim amount.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of multi-trip insurance?

  • Advantages

    • More cost effective than purchasing multiple single-trip policies

    • You can travel all year long without continuously shopping for a new policy each time (as long as your destination is covered in your policy)

    • Can also cover UK getaways

    • Can cover worldwide destinations

  • Disadvantages

    • You will usually have a trip length limit per trip you take (usually around 31 days)

    • May be more expensive than single trip travel insurance if you don’t travel often

    • There are often upper age limits (typically over 75)

Can I get annual travel insurance if I have a pre-existing medical condition?

Yes, you can get annual travel insurance with an existing medical condition. Due to the perceived increased risk of a medical emergency, your policy may be more expensive compared to others, but our comparison tool can help you find the best deal from a range of leading insurers.

What do I need to provide to get an annual travel insurance quote?

You will be asked a few lifestyle questions, what regions you would like your travel insurance to cover, and about any pre-existing medical conditions that you may have. If you have any medical conditions, you will be asked further questions.

When does a yearly travel policy start?

The start date you chose for your policy is when your 12-month period will begin. You will be covered for as many trips as you like within the year but you'll usually be limited to less than 31 days per trip.

Will I need extra travel insurance for activities?

Which activities are included in your annual travel policy will depend on your provider. You will usually need to add-on extra cover or take out a specialist policy if you plan to do any higher-risk activities such as:

Who can be covered under an annual travel insurance policy?

You can have an annual insurance policy for yourself or a joint travel policy with your partner. You can also get travel insurance for the whole family under one policy. If you travel without your family but still with more than two people you have the option to take out travel insurance for a group if you travel together often.

What is travel insurance excess?

The excess on your annual travel policy is the amount you volunteer to pay for each claim you make. Usually the higher the excess, the cheaper your premium price, but you need to make sure you can pay the excess amount in the event of any claims.

Do I need annual travel insurance if I have a GHIC or EHIC?

You still need travel insurance if you have a Global or European Health Insurance card (GHIC or EHIC). This is because although a GHIC will cover you for state healthcare if you have a medical emergency during your trip, it won’t cover some treatments, medical repatriation, or things like trip cancellation. Whether you choose multi-trip insurance or single-trip insurance is up to you.

We don’t give recommendations or financial advice, but we give you clear information so you can choose financial products that suit your circumstances.

Does MoneySuperMarket work with all the providers on the market?

No, not every company can be included in our service. This is because some companies don’t want their products included on comparison sites, and some decide that they would rather not pay a fee. There are also a few smaller providers who can struggle to cope with the volume of customers that can find their products if they appear on MoneySuperMarket.
