Design and display
The iPhone 12 Pro is larger than its iPhone 11 predecessor increasing from a 6.5-inch screen to 6.7 inches. It has dimensions of 160.8mm x 78.1mm x 7.4mm and it weighs 226 grams – heavier than other flagships, but about usual for the iPhone Pro Max line.
Like the other models in the iPhone 12 series, the design has changed slightly. Most noticeably, the curved sides have been replaced by a flat edge, which originated with the iPhone 4 and was last seen in the original iPhone SE. The new design uses premium materials, including a surgical steel band.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max comes in four colours:
- Pacific Blue
The rear of the phone is made of glass, like the iPhone 11, however new Ceramic Shield technology ensures a 4x better drop performance compared to previous iPhones.
Apple has improved the screens on the phones with Super Retina XDR, its latest display tech, for the best colour accuracy in an iPhone yet. The iPhone 12 Pro Max's 6.7-inch screen will offer 1200 nits of peak brightness, and more importantly one of the best resolutions we've seen on an iPhone yet. That's a resolution of 2778 x 1284, and that'll be 458 pixels per inch.
The newest iPhones have a feature you may recognise from the Mac charger: MagSafe is a new system that lets you clamp magnetic accessories, like cases and wireless chargers, to the back of your phone.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max keeps the basics of the last generation camera, although it has been improved slightly, and there are some differences between this and the iPhone 12 Pro.
Both phones' 12MP main lenses have wider apertures, at f/1.6 aperture compared to f/1.8. The iPhone 12 Pro Max features a new sensor that's 47% larger, this means that there's an 87% improvement in low-light performance (the iPhone Pro can only boast a 27% increased performance).
The iPhone 12 Pro Max’s 12MP telephoto lens has been improved to simulate a 65mm lens, providing a 5x optical zoom. The iPhone 12 Pro can only offer a 4x optical zoom with its 52mm lens.
Both the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max have a new, fourth spot on their rear camera arrays: a LiDAR scanner. Both models will be able to essentially see in the dark, which means that if you're shooting in low-light conditions the sensor will instantly recognise the subject and capture it straight away with Night Mode.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max is the only model to support Sensor-Shift Optical Image Stabilization, meaning it should be more effective at reducing ‘camera shake’, if you are taking a picture in a moving car, for example.
Excitingly, the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max will both be able to use the new Apple ProRAW photo file format when it launches later this year. Users will be able to shoot RAW photo files while simultaneously using the computational photography features such as Smart HDR 3 and Deep Fusion.
The iPhone 12 Pro is 5G-ready, which means you'll be able to connect to next-gen internet networks from your iPhone for the very first time.
All phones in the iPhone 12 range make use of the A14 Bionic chipset. Apple claims it’s the fastest chip ever in a smartphone, and a full 40% more powerful than the A13 chipset in the iPhone 11 range. You’ll also get to use the new iOS 14 operating system, and you’ll have storage options of 64GB, 256GB and 512GB.
As for battery life, Apple claims the iPhone 12 Pro Max will last for up to 20 hours of video playback.
