The iPhone 14 Pro’s key new features
The iPhone 14 Pro is absolutely packed with amazing new features, making it the best smartphone Apple has ever made. Key new additions include:
- No more notch - a new pill shaped cutout houses Face ID, while an adjacent hole punch is home to the selfie camera
- Dynamic Island - new notification system uses the iPhone 14 Pro’s cutout to reveal notifications, music playback and other key details at the top of the screen
- Always On Display - finally catching up with rival Android phones, the iPhone 14 Pro now has an Always On Display for seeing key details at a glance
- Customisable lock screen with new widgets and changeable fonts
- Updated triple lens camera with new 48MP sensor
- Two times brighter display
- Crash detection feature calls emergency services after car accidents
- Latest Apple A16 Bionic chipset
How good is the iPhone 14 Pro’s Camera?
This is where the iPhone 14 Pro really stands out. It has retained a triple lens system, rather than moving to a quad camera like the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra.
However, the main lens has been given a boost to a f/1.78 48MP and is backed up by a f/2.8 aperture 12MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom and a 12MP ultrawide lens with f/2.2 aperture. The main lens uses quad pixel tech, with Apple promising two times better low light photography compared with 2021’s iPhone 13 Pro.
That’s a bold claim, but one that holds much promise. The flash, too, has been upgraded and is now twice as bright as its predecessor. The TrueDepth selfie camera stays at 12MP but comes with improved low light smarts and autofocus.
Throw in 4K video at 24 frames per second and the iPhone 14 Pro’s camera is designed to take on and beat the very best Android smartphones.
How good is the iPhone 14 Pro’s Design
The iPhone 14 Pro’s design is second to none, with a sleek aluminium finish. It also drops the infamous notch, first seen on the iPhone X, for a cutout that is more in line with its competitors.
Apple, however, has not exactly made any other bold changes. To the untrained eye, the iPhone 14 Pro looks much the same to the iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro before it. That’s no bad thing, but those hoping for a complete overhaul will have to wait until 2023 to get one.
How good is the iPhone 14 Pro’s Display
Apple has long served up some of the best screens in the business and the iPhon 14 Pro is no different.
Aside from the change in the setup, with FaceTime and TrueDepth camera cutouts replacing the divisive notch, there are other key changes.
Apple says that the iPhone 14 Pro’s display is now up to two times brighter in sunny conditions, reaching a peak of 2,000 nits.
Photos and videos reach a peak of 1,600 nits. The variable refresh rate once again reaches 120Hz, meaning this is a device built for gaming.
The resolution comes in at 2556 x 1179 pixels, with 460 pixels per inch. It measures 6.1-inches, the same as the iPhone 13 Pro.
It now also comes with an Always On setup so you can check the time and other key details without having to pick the device up.
And, what’s more, the new Dynamic Island function brings notifications to life from the new cutouts. The overall effect is hugely impressive.
How good is the iPhone 14 Pro’s Battery life
Apple says the iPhone 14 Pro can handle a colossal 23 hours of video playback on a single charge.
While even the most ardent of streaming fanatics are unlikely to spend that long bingeing their favourite shows, in reality that means a battery which can easily last up to two days for basic use, such as messaging, browsing and social media.
The iPhone 14 Pro works with MagSafe wireless charging and can reach 50% power in half an hour with a 20W or higher charger (remember you’ll need to buy one of these separately).
This overall package puts the iPhone 14 Pro right up there with the very best smartphones currently available.
What are the key differences between the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro?
There are some key differences between the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro. Here’s our take on what Apple has got right with this latest version of its best iPhone.
What we like
- The end of the notch means a much sleeker cutout for Face ID
- Dynamic Island is a sleeker way of doing notifications
- Always On Display brings iPhone 14 Pro in line with best Samsung devices
- Camera is even better than predecessor, especially in low light
- A16 Bionic chipset is lightning fast
- Battery life is superb
What we don’t like
- Design is largely the same as older models
- Price is prohibitively expensive for most, with 128GB model costing £1,099 SIM free
How does the iPhone 14 Pro compare to other flagship handsets in the UK market?
The iPhone 14 Pro is arguably the best smartphone available right now. Only a handful of flagship devices come close.
These include the top of the range Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, Google Pixel 6 Pro and Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Fold4.Each of these devices have superb cameras that match the iPhone in terms of specs, while the Always On Display functionality Apple has introduced has long been a staple of Android phones.
What sets the iPhone apart is its excellent iOS 16 platform and super tight design.
Moneysupermarket's expert rating: Five out of five
Aside from the eye watering price, the iPhone 14 Pro is pretty much the perfect smartphone.
From its cutting edge camera to its epic battery life, through to its sleek new Dynamic Island function and A16 Bionic chipset, it’s the real deal.

Is the iPhone 14 Pro worth buying in 2023?
The iPhone 14 Pro is definitely worth buying in 2022.
It’s arguably the best smartphone currently available, even if its hefty price tag means you’ll need to either find a large amount of cash to get one outright or budget well to spread the cost over the length of a phone contract.
Only a few phones can match its overall prowess, with its camera, screen and battery life all class leading.
Is now a good time to buy the iPhone 14 Pro?
Yes. The iPhone 14 Pro has only just been announced, so now is a great time to get one. It will not be superseded for a year and will benefit from iOS updates for at least another five years.
Will the iPhone 14 Pro drop in price?
Sadly not. iPhones rarely drop in price before the launch of a new model, so any price drop won’t come until late 2023
Should I upgrade or wait for the 2023 model?
If you have an iPhone 13 Pro, upgrading now may cost you more and is not really worth it.
However, if you have an older iPhone or an Android phone, then now is the time to make the jump. The 2023 iPhone range won’t be available for another year.
