What is senior travel insurance?

Senior travel insurance is designed for older people and it’s usually more expensive than standard travel insurance for younger people. This is because those aged 65 and over are seen as a higher risk of making a claim on their travel insurance policy and they are more likely to have pre-existing medical conditions.

The cost of medical treatment abroad can be high and insurers price policies to make sure you are covered for these medical expenses if they have to pay them. Other factors, such as your general medical history, the length of your trip, where you’re going and the level of cover of your insurance, will also impact the overall price of your policy.

Every travel insurance policy will have its own limits when it comes to age. Usually insurers will group ages together in bands, for example those aged 65 to 70, 70 to 75, 80 to 85, and 85 to 90. There may also be an upper age limit, for example, 90, and an insurer won’t offer you cover if you are older than this.

The older you are, the more you can expect to pay and when comparing travel insurance for over 75s, prices often increase annually or every five years depending on the provider. If you’re being given a very high quote for a multi-trip travel insurance policy, a single-trip policy may be more affordable. There are also specialist insurers who can offer competitive rates on cover for older travellers.

What types of senior travel insurance policy can I get?

There are three types of travel insurance for seniors that can cover holidays of different lengths:

  • Map-Gradient-110

    Single trip travel insurance

A single trip policy will cover you for a one-off holiday and ends when you return home. The maximum length for this type of cover is usually no longer than 180 days.

This is often the most affordable option for older travellers who are being quoted high costs for annual travel insurance cover.

  • Calendar-Gradient-110

    Annual multi-trip travel insurance

This policy will cover multiple holidays, normally within a year. This type of cover can be cost effective for frequent flyers, as your trips throughout the year will be covered instead of having to purchase new cover for every trip.

If you go on several holidays throughout the year, this travel insurance cover may be your best option.

  • World-Gradient-110

    Long-stay cover

Sometimes called backpacker insurance, this policy will cover you for stays in multiple countries, an extended travel period and for a wider range of activities.

This is a good option if you’re planning an extended trip, such as a few months travelling around Australia or the USA.

You be able to pay for add-ons such as cruise cover if you have a cruise booked during your trip or winter sports cover if these are on your agenda.

What does holiday insurance cover?

Travel insurance policy inclusions and exclusions vary. The following information provides a general overview of common senior travel insurance inclusions and exclusions.

Always read your policy documents thoroughly to understand what is and isn't covered before your trip and so you’re aware of any excess you may be required to pay.

You should also speak to your insurer before receiving medical treatment, if possible, as there may be limits on the type of hospital you visit, for example.

  • What’s covered?

    • Loss, theft or damage to your medication or medical equipment

    • Mobility aid cover if your mobility scooter or wheelchair is stolen, lost or damaged

    • 24-hour medical emergency treatment

    • Loss, theft of or damage to your luggage and personal belongings

    • Repatriation

    • Trip cancellation, curtailment or delays

    • Medical cover

    • Cover for pre-existing medical conditions (this will depend on the policy and the condition)

    • Emergency dental work (this may be a paid-for extra or included as standard)

  • What’s not covered

    • Non-disclosed pre-existing conditions

    • Airline strikes

    • High-risk activities

    • Accidents related to drugs/alcohol

    • Travelling against FCDO advice

    • Missed flights

    • Choosing not to travel

What policy extras can I include on my senior travel insurance?

There are a wide range of options when it comes to optional extras for travel insurance policies. It’s up to you which you buy, if any. While none of these are essential, they may be extremely useful if you need to make a claim and they can provide extra peace of mind.

However, you don’t want to be paying for something you’ll never use, if you’re going on a cruise trip in the Caribbean you might not need winter sports cover, for example, so always look at the small print so you know what’s included. Here are just some of the add-ons you can pay for:

  • Passport-Gradient-110

    Passport cover

Losing your passport on holiday can be stressful, but knowing you have passport cover can alleviate the stress.

This type of policy can insure you for the cost of a replacement or waive the excess claim fee.

The exact type of passport cover you’ll get will depend on the provider, so check exactly what they offer.

  • Ship-Gradient-110

    Cruise cover

If your cruise trip isn’t as smooth sailing as you planned, cruise cover can compensate you for any issues.

This specialist insurance will protect you for problems such as cabin confinement, cruise interruption and also offers missed port cover.

  • Plane-Gradient-110

    Missed departure

Sometimes your flight may be unable to go ahead, and you can be covered for this with a missed departure policy.

With this cover, you can be insured for public transport delays, car breakdowns, extreme weather and road accidents.

You won’t be compensated for missing your flight if it’s purely your fault e.g., if you spent too much time in duty-free.

  • Companion cover

You may be covered if you are bringing a travelling companion along with you, such as a nurse or a carer.

They may be included on your travel insurance policy, or they may need their own cover. This will depend on the insurer and the travel insurance policy you’ve chosen.

  • Broken-Phone-Gradient-110

    Gadget cover

Although most travel insurance will cover your gadgets, it may not insure pricey devices.

For added peace of mind, and if you’re taking high-value items away with you, it might be a good idea to get gadget cover, to protect you in case your electronics are damaged or stolen.

How much is senior travel insurance?

The cost of travel insurance depends on lots of different things including your medical history, where you’re travelling, how long you’re away for, what activities you have booked on your trip, and the type of policy you buy.

The cost of insurance for older travellers is typically more than standard travel insurance for younger people. The average price of a policy for someone aged 60 to 64, for example, is £53.56^ . This rises to £93.25^ on average for those aged 70 to 74 and £140.22^ for those aged 85 and older. In comparison, standard travel insurance for someone aged 18 to 49 is £32.13^ on average.

However, there are lots of ways to keep the cost of insurance down without compromising on medical cover. This includes things like tweaking your trip, going for a shorter time, for example, or to fewer destinations. A two-month trip to the USA, for example, will cost a lot more to insure than a week in France.

What if I have a pre-exisiting conditon?

If you have a pre-existing condition, it is important for you to declare this on your application. Common conditions include high blood pressure, cancer, heart conditions, diabetes or mental health issues.

Insurers may ask you if your condition is controlled or non-controlled and both of these must be declared. Controlled pre-existing medical conditions are those which are receiving treatment for while non-controlled conditions usually refer to ongoing conditions or those you are waiting for test results or treatment for.

Insurers may request to see more information about pre-existing medical conditions, such as access to your medical history, or they may ask you to have a medical screening before they will cover you.

Pre-existing medical conditions will make your cover more expensive because it means you are more high-risk, but there are specialist providers which can offer more affordable cover.

If you don’t declare any pre-existing medical conditions you suffer from, your policy will be rendered void if you try to make a claim. So, it’s essential that you’re honest about any ailments you have.

What's the best travel insurance for seniors?

It’s essential that you choose the right cover for your trip. The cheapest policy isn’t always the most comprehensive so take the time to research your options and read the small print. If you are given an expensive quote, there may be things you can do to lower the cost:

  • Number-1-Gradient-50

    Shop around

Comparing quotes from several providers makes it easier to decide whether the cost and features meet your needs.

  • Number-2-Gradient-50

    Consider optional extras

Extra add-ons, such as hospital benefit cover can enhance your coverage, however you should check what’s already covered under the policy you choose.

  • Number-3-Gradient-50

    Check policy type

If you’re a regular getaway-goer and then an annual multi-trip policy could save you more money in the long run, saving you from searching for a new policy every time you travel.

  • Number-4-Gradient-50

    Increase your excess

Selecting a higher excess can help lower your premiums. But if you do make a claim, you’ll have to pay more toward it.

Is there an upper age limit to purchase travel insurance?

Providers may have upper age limits for certain types of policies and this will depend on the insurer and the type of cover. There may be different age limits for single and annual policies too.

Premiums rise with age but policies are available for anyone, no matter how old they are. When you buy insurance you’ll usually need to choose an age band, such as between 70 and 75 or 85 and older. The older you are, the higher the chance you’ll need to provide medical details or attend a medical screening.

Do I need travel insurance if I have a GHIC?

The EHIC/GHIC scheme offers limited protection for travellers in EU member countries. These cards provide the holder with emergency medical treatment in state-run facilities.

This may be free, or a low-cost, and will be the same price as locals pay. However, travel insurance offers a lot more than this such as repatriation, lost luggage, and treatment at private hospitals and using a GHIC is not a sufficient replacement.

What will happen if I don't declare my medical conditions on my travel insurance?

If you don’t tell your insurer about your pre-existing medical conditions, you risk invalidating your policy and this may leave you responsible for paying medical expenses.

If you make a claim and the provider finds out that you have hidden medical conditions, your claim will be rejected. It's important that you are honest with your provider and provide the details it asks for such as your diagnosis date, medical history and treatment plan.

Will my travel insurance cover trips to any country?

When you buy travel insurance, you need to choose the area of the world it will cover. These are broadly grouped into the following categories:

  • Worldwide

  • Worldwide excluding USA Canada, and the Caribbean

  • Europe only

The cost of medical expenses in countries such as the USA and Canada is typically more expensive so your premiums will reflect this.

The policy will only cover travel to countries covered by the policy. Policies will also exclude travel that goes against FCDO guidelines so always check the FCDO website before you go.

We don’t give recommendations or financial advice, but we give you clear information so you can choose financial products that suit your circumstances.

Does MoneySuperMarket work with all the providers on the market?

No, not every company can be included in our service. This is because some companies don’t want their products included on comparison sites, and some decide that they would rather not pay a fee. Our goal is to search deals from as wide a range of companies as possible so that you can choose the deal that suits you.
