Getting the cheapest mobile phone deal

When picking the right plan, consider how you use your phone to avoid overpaying on your contract.

Only pay for the data you need, but make sure you have enough

According to Ofcom, the average UK mobile customer used 9.9GB of data a month in 2024, so check your own usage to make sure you're not paying for unlimited data unnecessarily.

But be aware that running out of data and paying for costly add-ons might make your cheap phone contract not so cheap in the long run.

Look out for freebies and incentives

From free Apple TV+, EU roaming, or even bill credits, mobile networks often throw in perks to sweeten the deal - just be sure you'd actually use any incentives before switching to that network.

Consider an android handset for a lower monthly cost

Apple don't cater to the budget-conscious mobile phone customer, but phones running Android from Motorola or Samsung are perfectly reliable phones at under half the cost of a new iPhone.

Trade-in your old handset for money of your new one

If your old phone's in good condition, you can sell it to put towards your new one. We help you compare ways to sell your phone for cash, even if it's broken.

Insure your phone to avoid tears if it gets damaged

Your phone will come with a warranty, but this won't include accidental damage or theft. We'd recommend getting phone insurance quotes and protecting your handset to avoid costly repairs or replacements - especially if you're locked in to a 24 month contract.

Whether you’re looking for a plan with extra features and incentives, or something simple and sweet, it’s important to choose a network that works for you.

Our expert says…

Want to cut your monthly phone bill? Check these things.

“The smartest way to cut your mobile costs is to separate the phone from the tariff – pairing a quality refurbished handset with a SIM-only plan can save hundreds of pounds over a two-year contract. When comparing networks, don’t just look at the monthly price but at extras you’d otherwise pay for. For example, O2 is currently the only major UK network to include roaming in 48 European destinations on all its plans, which is a huge advantage if you travel frequently within Europe. Also make sure that you are going to get good coverage from the network where you will be using your phone the most”

What’s the difference between a contract phone and SIM-only plan?

There are two choices when it comes to mobile phone contracts:

  • Monthly contract:

You pay a monthly fee for a new phone and an allowance of calls, texts and data. You’ll be tied to a network by a contract that usually lasts between 12 and 24 months.

  • SIM-only deals:

As the name suggests, a SIM-only deal gets you a package of calls, texts and data – but not a new phone.

Do I own my phone after my contract ends?

If you have a contract phone and the contract ends, it means you've paid off your handset and it now belongs to you. So, you can choose what to do with it.

This gives you the flexibility to choose a SIM only deal to continue using your phone. Or you could choose to sell your phone and upgrade to a newer handset with another pay-monthly contract.

How can I find out when my current contract is ending?

Text INFO to 85075 to get your contract information.

If you're still unsure, contact your current provider.

Can I keep my old phone number?

If you're switching provider and want to keep your current number you can port it over with a PAC code. To get your PAC code:

  1. Text 'PAC' to 65075 and you'll get a text message back with your code. It should be an alphanumeric code containing three letters and six number, for example, 'BRT395062'

  2. Give your PAC code to your new mobile network provider - you can usually do this when signing up for your new deal.

  3. The new provider will confirm the number transfer is underway and complete it in as little as one working day.

Your PAC code is valid for 30 days, and if it expires you can request a new one from your old network.

Can I get a phone contract with bad credit?

When you take out a new phone contract your credit score will be checked by the contract provider. There’s no minimum credit score required to get a mobile phone, as each network operator will score you differently. There's a possibility you could be rejected for a contract if you have a bad credit score.
