Artificial intelligence features heavily in the Galaxy S24, making it Samsung’s ‘smartest’ smartphone to date. As well as a giant leap in photo editing prowess, the S24 uses AI to help translate between 13 different languages in a real-time phone call.

It also employs AI to help with transcribing audio – for example, it can recognise different speakers and help you take notes accordingly. Not to mention, it’s among the first devices to debut Google’s ‘Circle to Search’ feature, which you can use to circle anything on screen to search for it on the web.

Availability and price

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S24 at its launch event on 17th January 2024. It was announced alongside two other variants: Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Pre-orders followed the announcement, with the phone going on sale in the UK on 31st January.

Prices at launch started from £799 – that’s actually a bit cheaper than the S23 at release, which is always welcome to see.

How good is the Samsung Galaxy S24’s design and display?

The Samsung Galaxy S24 stays largely true to the design blueprint of the Samsung Galaxy S23. It still features the triple floating camera lens on the back, as well as the aluminium wraparound frame.

Look closer, though, and you’ll notice a few subtle tweaks. For example, it has slightly smaller bezels – therefore maximising the screen real estate – and flatter edges, which makes it more in line with the likes of the iPhone 15. Though dimensions are roughly similar to that of the S23, it’s actually ever-so-slightly larger – it now sports a 6.2-inch display, up from 6.1 inches.

Still, if you’re looking for a more exciting upgrade, you may want to plump for the Galaxy S24 Ultra instead. Samsung’s top-end flagship is now crafted from titanium, making it much stronger – and much like the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max.

As well as 120Hz refresh rate for smooth scrolling, the base S24 (along with the S24 Plus) can now drop down to a 1Hz refresh rate – this adaptive refresh rate was previously limited to just the UItra. This will translate to improvements to battery life and power efficiency.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 comes in four colours: Onyx Black, Marble Grey, Cobalt Violet and Amber Yellow. Additionally, there are a few colourways sold exclusively on Samsung’s website – these are Sandstone Orange, Sapphire Blue, and Jade Green.

How good is the Samsung Galaxy S24’s camera?

On paper, the Galaxy S24 features the exact same camera hardware as the S23: a triple lens camera comprising a 50MP main snapper, 12MP ultra-wide, and a 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom. There’s also a 12MP front camera – no change here, either.

As is the case with Samsung, the S24 produces great snaps straight from the camera – no editing required here. Colours are vibrant, the contrast just ‘pops’, and dynamic range is excellent. While colours can stray to the oversaturated side – typical of Samsung snaps – it does make your camera roll a delight to scroll through.

The real game-changer is all in the software. With the S24, Samsung has unleashed a host of AI tools, all of which allow for plenty of clever photo editing and optimisation.

AI-assisted features include Generative Edit and Edit Suggestion. You’ll be able to move or remove people and objects in photos and videos, and even generatively re-fill the background. And if you’re a novice to editing, AI can automatically advise the best edits for your shot, whether that’s adjusting the colour balance or tweaking the shadows.

It also employs AI wizardry to generate richer, sharper, more detailed shots on the fly – you’ll no longer miss a shot due to bad lighting.

All these new and exciting features means the Galaxy S24 can give the Google Pixel 8 – the market leader in AI-powered photography – a serious run for its money.

Is the Samsung Galaxy S24 good for video?

The AI magic doesn’t stop at photography, either. The S24 harnesses the power of AI to reduce graininess and stabilise any shaky footage.

Footage from the S24 is brilliantly sharp and full of clarity – little wonder when it can shoot 8K at up to 30fps.

What are the key differences between the Samsung Galaxy S24 and the Samsung Galaxy S23?

Though the Samsung Galaxy S24 and its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S23, don’t look too different side-by-side, there are several upgrades to point out:

  • New AI-powered photo editing – Although the camera hardware is nothing new, the S24 debuts a host of exciting and eminently powerful AI photography features
  • New chipset – Under the hood of the Galaxy S24 is Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, although in the UK this is likely to be replaced by Samsung's own Exynos 2400. Either way, it’s the beating heart at the centre of the S24’s AI capabilities – and a step up from the S23's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip
  • Better longevity – The Galaxy S24 is set to get software support for a whopping seven years – that’s one year longer than the S23

How does the Samsung Galaxy S24 compare to flagship handsets in the UK?

Along with the base Galaxy S24, Samsung released two other models: the Galaxy S24 Plus and Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Of course, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is the most premium of the three. There’s the standout 200MP main camera and 50MP telephoto lens, as well as the out-of-this-world 100x Space Zoom. If you’re a keen photographer – or you want the expansive screen and S-Pen support – the Ultra’s the one to go for.

As for the Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus, the key difference is size. So, it all boils down to whether you want a phone that’s pocketable and suited to one-handed usage, or if you prefer the S24 Plus’ bigger and better screen.

If you’re after a more affordable handset, it’s worth considering the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE. Released towards the end of 2023, it packs plenty of flagship features for a more palatable price.

Being the first major handset release of 2024, only time will tell as to how the Galaxy S24 stacks up against Apple and Google’s flagships this year. Looking at the current market, it’s most comparable with the iPhone 15, released a few months prior. With both phones offering their own strengths, it mainly comes down to your preference between iOS or Android.

MoneySuperMarket's expert rating

Our rating: 4.5/5

Unsurprisingly, the standard Samsung Galaxy S24 is a powerhouse of a phone. Packing a stellar camera, powerful processor and abundance of handy AI-powered features, it’s a strong all-rounder that’s easy to recommend to both casual users and phone fanatics alike.

Although it’s not a complete reinvention of the wheel when it comes to design and hardware, the S24 does herald the new era of AI-powered smartphones. From photography to phone call translation, its new AI features are pretty mind-blowing – and they should all help to seamlessly enhance your user experience.

All this makes the S24 one of Samsung’s most advanced and powerful handsets to date. And it’s slightly cheaper than the S23 at launch, to boot.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy S24 a great choice for anyone looking for an Android all-rounder. If you’re looking for a reliable tool that performs brilliantly in everyday tasks, the Galaxy S24 does all that – and more.

Contract options

Looking to spread the cost of a Samsung Galaxy S24 with a pay-monthly contract? We have plenty of options here at MoneySuperMarket.

Can I get the Samsung Galaxy S24 with no upfront cost?

Potentially, yes. While you usually need to pay an upfront cost for flagship phone contracts, some networks do have no upfront cost phone deals.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 might be available without an initial payment, but such deals are not always available and can vary with time.

To stay updated on these offers, it's recommended to regularly compare different deals. You can use the filter slider in our comparison table above to display only the deals with no upfront costs.

Can I get the Samsung Galaxy S24 with unlimited data?

Absolutely – plenty of networks offer the Samsung Galaxy S24 with unlimited data.

These unlimited data plans are perfect for streamers, gamers, and social media enthusiasts who never want to worry about running out of data.

Simply adjust the comparison table's data slider to 'unlimited' or set it to a very high data limit to find the best unlimited data deals for the Samsung Galaxy S24.

What's the cheapest way to get the Samsung Galaxy S24?

In general, the cheapest way of getting any phone is to buy it outright and off-contract, then get a SIM-only deal with a monthly allowance of data, minutes, and texts.

However, the high initial cost of the Samsung Galaxy S24 might not be feasible for everyone. For those who prefer to spread the cost over time, a pay-monthly phone contract is a great alternative.

You can use the comparison table at the top of this page to find and compare the most affordable pay-monthly deals for the Samsung Galaxy S24.

Can I get the Samsung Galaxy S24 with poor credit?

Getting the Samsung Galaxy S24 on contract with poor credit can be quite the hurdle, as mobile networks often conduct thorough credit checks.

Given that the Samsung Galaxy S24 is a premium device, the likelihood of being accepted for a contract with a bad credit rating is slim. If you find yourself in this situation, our bad credit phones guide can offer some advice and alternative options.

Frequently asked questions

Is now a good time to buy the Samsung Galaxy S24?

If you’re hanging on to an old phone and desperately want to upgrade, now is a great time to buy the Samsung Galaxy S24.

It's expected to receive at least seven years of software updates, which is a standard commitment from Samsung. This longevity is something to bear in mind if you're looking for a phone that won't become obsolete too quickly.

But if you’re hesitant about the high price tag, it may be worth considering the previous year’s model instead. After all, the Samsung Galaxy S23 is still a great phone.

Will the Samsung Galaxy S24 drop in price?

It's a common trend in the smartphone market: prices tend to fall when a new model hits the shelves. Samsung tends to release new Galaxy models at the start of every year, usually around January or February.

If you've got your heart set on the Samsung Galaxy S24 but want to snag a better deal, it might be worth holding off until the next release cycle. That's when you're likely to see a drop in the current model's price.

You might also find special offers during certain times of the year, such as Black Friday.
