*Average speeds are based on the download speeds of at least 50% of customers at peak time (8pm to 10pm). Speed can be affected by a range of technical and environmental factors. The speed you receive where you live may be lower than that listed above. You can check the estimated speed to your property prior to purchasing.
Fibre/cable services at your postcode are subject to availability. You can confirm availability on the provider's website.
Some broadband providers may increase monthly prices each year during your contract. Please refer to individual broadband provider's terms and conditions before signing up.
What's the best broadband provider in Glasgow?
If you live in or around Glasgow, you’ll be able to take your pick from a wide range of packages and providers. So, whether you’re looking for a simple, entry-level fibre deal or the speediest ultrafast broadband money can buy, there’ll be many options available.
The best provider for you will depend on which networks are available at your exact address. However, using Ofcom customer service data, we’ve picked out some of the providers that perform strongly for customer satisfaction.
Plusnet customers report the highest satisfaction rating at 91%, with an average call waiting time of just 50 seconds.
EE follows closely with a 97% satisfaction rating, though its average call waiting time is longer at 2 minutes 53 seconds.
Vodafone places third with an 86% satisfaction rating and a very quick 25-second average call waiting time.
What types of broadband can I get in Glasgow?
Glasgow has a wide choice of broadband, from basic ADSL to ultrafast full fibre.
ADSL is the most common entry-level option, using copper phone lines and averaging around 10–11Mbps.
Fibre broadband is also widely available and is typically faster and more reliable. There are two main types:
FTTC (fibre-to-the-cabinet): fibre to your local cabinet, then copper to your home. Typical speeds: 36–68Mbps.
FTTP (fibre-to-the-premises): fibre all the way to your home for a more stable connection. Typical speeds: 100Mbps–1,000Mbps+.
FTTC is more common than FTTP, and full fibre availability in Glasgow varies by area. There’s also cable broadband from Virgin Media, using fibre and coaxial cables, with speeds up to 1,130Mbps (postcode dependent).
Most Glasgow homes can get some form of fibre, but the exact speeds will depend on your address, ranging from 36-68Mbps on FTTC to 100Mbps-1,000Mbps+ where FTTP or Virgin Media is available.
What broadband speeds can I expect in Glasgow?
On average, residents in Glasgow can expect download speeds of around 36-68 Mbps on standard fibre (FTTC) connections.
In some parts of Glasgow where full-fibre (FTTP) or gigabit-capable cable networks are available, speeds of 100 Mbps or more are possible, and in some locations even up to 1 Gbps+.
Upload speeds on standard fibre (FTTC) connections typically sit around 8–20 Mbps, while full-fibre (FTTP) or cable services can offer much higher uploads, often 50 Mbps and above, depending on the provider and package.
Your actual speed will depend on your exact postcode, the technology available (FTTP, cable, fibre-to-cabinet etc), how far your home is from the cabinet or network hub, and how busy the network is at peak times.

How to compare and switch broadband
There are three simple steps to compare broadband deals and switch providers
-
Check you're out of contract
Ensure you're no longer within the minimum terms of the contract length with your current broadband provider. You can find out by looking at your original contract, confirmation email, or by contacting their customer service.
-
Enter your postcode and choose a personalised bundle
We algorithmically sort broadband packages based on your location, the speed you'd get, and how much it costs.
-
Complete your switch
Your new provider should contact your current provider and arrange the switch for you. And you'll receive letters and emails updating you on this.
How to get a better broadband deal
Whether you're looking for cheap and cheerful or high-spec full fibre broadband, everyone's needs are different. Finding the best deal for you starts with understanding how you plan to use it or if bundling your services lower your monthly bill.
-
Are you still within your contract?
If you're still in your minimum term, you'd be subject to an early repayment charge if you ended your contract early.
If you're out of contract or approaching the end, you can switch without penality.
-
Can you get a better deal for the same price?
A tariff may offer everything you're looking for, but does it come to the right monthly price and offer good value for money? Shop around to find the right tariff at the best possible price.
-
Can you get any bundles, freebies, or cashback?
Many providers offer tempting incentives, such as cashback or gift cards to new customers. These may help bring down the cost of an expensive broadband deal, although you should also consider whether these gifts are as important as factors such as speed and cost.
Should I bundle my services?
Bundling your services can help you save even more on your broadband bills.
If you watch TV or enjoy streaming, bundling could save you money
Broadband and TV packages are cost-effective if you already pay for TV services like Netflix, Sky Sports, or other Sky channels.
One bill could save you money, and Ofcom estimates that bundling services is up to 34% cheaper than buying them individually from separate providers.
If you want a landline or a SIM card, broadband and phone packages are good value
Beyond landlines, broadband providers are starting to bundle SIM cards with a broadband connection. If you're currently on a SIM-only contract and it's up for renewal soon, look into combining your phone and broadband - it could work out a lot cheaper.
If you want to bundle everything, 'Triple Play' can simplify your bills
Bundling your broadband, phone, and TV packages will typically cost less than buying them all from separate providers - just be sure you're using what you're paying for.
If you just need a broadband connection, don't pay for more than you need
Many providers offer just the broadband connection, so if you don't need TV channels, a landline, or any other services, then opting for a 'broadband only' connection could save you up to 15% on your broadband bills.
If fixed broadband access is an issue, try mobile broadband
Mobile broadband has come a long way, with providers like Three offering 4G & 5G home broadband connections at speeds of up to 150Mbps.

Broadband explained
Which is the best internet provider in Glasgow?
It’s difficult to definitively name the “best” internet provider in Glasgow, as that largely depends on what you’re looking for in a broadband deal, as well as what you can get at your address.
That said, the fastest broadband in Glasgow is supplied by Virgin Media. Whether you can get it depends on your postcode – it’s available on an address-by-address basis.
If you can’t get it just yet, don’t fret – you’ll likely be able to get fast and ultrafast fibre broadband with any provider that uses BT’s Openreach network. This includes the likes of Sky, EE, Plusnet, TalkTalk, Vodafone, NOW, and – of course – BT.
What broadband speed can I expect in Glasgow?
Again, that depends on where you live in/around Glasgow, as well as the speed that suits your needs best.
Wondering what speed you’re currently getting? Use our broadband speed test to see your home broadband speed – that way, you can check if you’re getting the advertised speeds, and decide whether you need a faster broadband package.
