Here you can explore all editions of the Household Money Index and data about spending on bills

The MoneySuperMarket Household Money Index (HMI) started in September 2023 to find out how much people across the UK spend on bills and everyday living expenses.

Every three months we ask people how much they spend on 31 different bills and expenses. Then MoneySuperMarket's experts turn the numbers into easy-to-understand insights so you can compare how much of your income is spent on bills and everyday costs.

We hope it helps you to get the best value for your money and to get serious about savings on bills.

The Household Money Index — April 2025

In our April 2025 Household Money Index, we look at the cost of electric vehicles compared to petrol and explore the latest changes to UK income and spending.

Our data reveals UK households are spending £1,524.37 a month on 31 separate bills and outgoings, equal to a spend of around £50 a day.

  • 69% of the average earner's monthly income is spent on bills and outgoings, leaving an average disposable income of £682.27 per month.

  • While spending on a number of household bills has gone up, some have also decreased. The cost of groceries, fuel, and credit card repayments all fell in the first quarter of 2025.

December 2024 Total monthly HMI: £1,392. Daily cost: £46.40. Committed spending (of income): 62%. Disposable income up (per year): £836
