Is Lyca Mobile any good in 2023?

As well as flexible and budget-friendly SIM-only plans, Lyca Mobile stands out from the crowd with its inclusive international minutes. Read our review to find out more.

Our Lyca Mobile review in summary

Although it’s a smaller network, Lyca Mobile has a sizeable selection of plans that won’t break the bank. And with the option of one-month, three-month, six-month and 12-month plans, there’s a lot to choose from.

It’s fair to say that flexible and good-value plans are kind of a given with budget networks. However, one thing that sets Lyca Mobile apart from the crowd is its inclusive international minutes. Other than Lebara, it’s quite rare to find SIM plans that come with international calls for no extra fee.

So, if you like chatting with friends or family living abroad, it’s well worth considering Lyca Mobile.

Lyca Mobile SIM-only plans

When it comes to SIM-only plans, there’s a dizzying amount of choice with Lyca Mobile. And with the cheapest starting from £5 for 3GB of data at the time of writing (July 2022), they’re eminently affordable, too.

Most deals are available on flexible one-month rolling plans, although you can get some deals on a three-month, six-month or 12-month contract. If you’re willing to sign up to a longer-term contract, you can save some money in the long run.

As well as choosing the contract length, you’ll need to decide between a National or International plan.

All National plans come with an inclusive 100 international minutes or more. This means you’re free to call far-flung destinations, such as Australia, India and China, without having to pay extra.

Better still, the International plans come with even more generous call allowances, ranging from 500 international minutes to unlimited calls.

The vast majority of plans come with unlimited UK calls and texts. And no matter which plan you pick, you get inclusive EU roaming and 5G-ready SIMs.

Finally, if you exceed your monthly data allowance, you can add a Data Bolt On to your plan.

All in all, there’s a lot of choice – meaning there’s a fair bit to weigh up when selecting a plan that best fits your needs.

Lyca Mobile phone contract plans

While Lyca Mobile does offer a selection of mobile phones, its phone contracts aren’t as comprehensive as the ones you’d get with big-name networks.

Rather than getting a deal that bundles a handset with a SIM plan, you’ll simply buy the device, and then get a separate SIM-only deal to go with it.

You do get quite a few options when paying off your handset, though: buying it outright, ‘buy now, pay later’ with Klarna, splitting the payment into three equal monthly instalments, or spreading the cost over six to 36 months.

Lyca Mobile coverage

Lyca Mobile uses O2’s extensive network to provide coverage. Its 4G network covers around 99% of the UK population, and offers good signal strength and data speeds.

There’s also decent 5G connectivity in most major towns and cities, as well as plenty of smaller locations. As all Lyca Mobile SIM plans come with 5G for no extra cost, you’ll just need a 5G-compatible handset to make use of these top speeds.

Having said that, Lyca Mobile currently doesn’t offer 5G support for iOS devices – though this may change in the near future.

Lyca Mobile roaming

While most major networks have reintroduced roaming charges in the EU, Lyca Mobile has kept inclusive roaming with all its plans. You’ll be able to use your plan in European destinations as you would back home, at no extra cost.

Lyca Mobile customer service

Customer service is one of Lyca Mobile’s strong points. It has a Trustpilot rating of 4.65 out of 5, which is significantly better than larger, household-name networks.

To get in touch with Lyca Mobile’s multilingual customer service team, call them on 0207 132 0322, or 322 if you have a Lyca Mobile number. Lines are open 9am-6pm, Monday to Saturday.

Otherwise, you can also send them an email or fill out an online form.

Lyca Mobile extras and benefits

As with other budget networks, Lyca Mobile operates on a ‘no frills, no fuss’ basis.

So, to keep costs down, it doesn’t offer the tempting perks or rewards you’d get with big-name networks like O2, EE and Vodafone.

Instead, all its value comes from its affordable SIM plans, which give you flexibility, inclusive EU roaming and international minutes.

Lyca Mobile stores and offline experience

You can buy Lyca Mobile top-ups from a range of UK retailers, such as Post Offices, major supermarkets, corner shops and more.

True, it’s not the same set-up as the major networks, which typically have dedicated shops where you can browse handsets and get help from staff. But as most smaller networks don’t have any in-person presence on UK high streets at all, this is a nice-to-have.

Enter your postcode in its store locator to find the nearest Lyca Mobile retailer to you.

Lyca Mobile's deals and incentives

As mentioned above, Lyca Mobile doesn’t offer free gifts or vouchers with its plans.

Nevertheless, it’s well worth keeping an eye out for time-limited sales. For example, at the time of writing (July 2022), new customers can get a 50% discount for three months on some of the monthly National plans.

Lyca Mobile pricing

One huge selling point of Lyca Mobile is its affordability. For the price you pay, you get a generous amount of data, as well as 100 international minutes.

Its cheapest plan is the UK Plan Smart, which gives you 3GB of data, 1000 UK minutes and texts, and 100 international minutes – all for £5 a month.

All this makes Lyca Mobile an easy recommendation for those on a budget.

Pros and Cons of choosing Lyca Mobile

  • Huge range of affordable plans
  • Generous allowance of international minutes
  • Inclusive EU roaming
  • Highly rated customer service

  • Not the most comprehensive handset contracts
  • No perks or benefits
  • No 5G with iOS devices

How does Lyca Mobile compare against other networks?

In general, Lyca Mobile stacks up well against comparable networks. Looking at the likes of iD Mobile and SMARTY, it offers slightly less data for the price you pay, but you do get those coveted international minutes.

Lyca Mobile’s main competitor is Lebara, another budget network that specialises in international calls. They both have similar prices and data, call and text allowances, as well as high ratings on Trustpilot.

Compared to household names like EE, Vodafone and O2, Lyca Mobile’s SIM-only plans are much, much cheaper, particularly when it comes to one-month rolling contracts. However, those major networks come with an array of extra perks and rewards. Plus, if you’re looking for a mobile phone contract, you’ll be better off getting a plan with a big network.
