The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 key new features
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is slimmer and lighter than 2021’s Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3. Its design is more durable, thanks to the inclusion of a new aluminium frame and the latest Gorilla Glass Victus tech.
Both displays have beefed up resolutions, while the triple lens camera has been boosted to match the impressive setup on the Samsung Galaxy S22. It also offers the newest Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset and is available with up to 1TB of storage, a boost on the top end 512GB model of the Galaxy Z Fold3. Fast charging also comes as standard.
How good is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 camera?
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4’s camera is excellent, with the same triple lens setup found on the Galaxy S22. That means a 50MP wide lens, 12MP ultrawide and 10MP telephoto, with 3x optical zoom and a cool Space Zoom feature.
There’s also an impressive 10MP selfie camera and a further 4MP front facing camera on top of the larger main screen.
Overall, results are as you’d expect, with excellent colour reproduction, eye popping detail and more than decent night time performance. Video recording also stretches to 8K.
The only shame is that Samsung didn’t go all out and bring the truly amazing quad camera from the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra to the party.
How good is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 design?
The overall design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 feels a lot more sleek than the Fold3, despite it looking broadly similar. That’s because the new sharp edges make it feel safer in the hand, while there’s a real premium feel to proceedings whether the device is open or folded.
Folded it looks just like a regular smartphone, although from the side you’ll see that it’s twice as thick. That’s the price for having a device that can fold open to become an excellent tablet, that more than holds its own against Samsung’s own tablet range, as well as the iPad mini.
Whichever way you use it, the Galaxy Z Fold4 feels like the future and seems a lot sturdier than earlier iterations of the device.
How good is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 display?
While the brilliant Galaxy Z Flip4 focuses on offering a compact design when folded, the Galaxy Z Fold4 is really all about showcasing two fully fledged devices in one.The screen on the front is a 6.2-inch colossus, with 904 x 2316 pixel resolution and a funky 23.1:9 screen ratio. It’s longer than your average smartphone screen but acts just like a normal device, with access to the One UI of Google Android. It’s protected by Gorilla Glass Victus and features Dynamic AMOLED 2X tech, as well as 120Hz refresh rate.
When opened, the Galaxy Fold4 becomes a top end tablet, with a huge 7.6-inch screen with the same Dynamic AMOLED 2X tech as the screen on the front. The resolution comes in at 1812 x 2176 pixels, with 120Hz refresh rate. For streaming video and working on-the-fly, it’s the business, especially as it’s compatible with Samsung’s S Pen (which you’ll sadly need to buy separately).
How good is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 battery life?
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 comes with a 4,400mAh battery. That’s smaller than the Galaxy S22 Ultra, but can last an entire day on a single charge. It also supports fast charging, although you won’t get the charger required in the box. Buy one though and you can get around 30% battery in just a quarter of an hour.
The tech on show here means it’s unsurprising the battery doesn’t last longer. If you value having a device that can last two days then the Galaxy S22 or iPhone 13 might be a better option in the long term.
What are the key differences between the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3?
Although they look similar, the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Fold3 have some key differences to note.
What we like
- Camera matches the Galaxy S22
- Samsung has made the Fold4 tougher and more durable than the Fold3
- New productivity features allows for four apps to be open and a dock on main screen
What we don't like
- Very expensive
- Questions remain over how long hinge on screen will last
How does the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 compare to other flagship handsets in the UK market? The only phone that looks remotely like the Galaxy Z Fold4 is its smaller stablemate, the Galaxy Z Flip4. Its proper smartphone screen and tablet display are amazing.
That said, you can get the same camera on the Samsung Galaxy S22 and a better one on the S22 Ultra. The latter is also cheaper, despite being a best in class device.
If you value productivity, the large iPhone 13 Pro Max also does a good job and can be used in conjunction with other Apple products.
MoneySuperMarket’s expert rating: Four and a half out of five
There’s really nothing like the Samsung Galaxy Fold4. It stands out from the crowd and manages to marry the convenience of a smartphone with the computer-like prowess of a tablet.
The camera is great, even if it’s outdone by the Galaxy S22 Ultra, and the screens themselves look fabulous. If you have the cash and want something unique, then look no further.
