Availability and price
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 was unveiled alongside the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 at the Galaxy Unpacked event on 26th July 2023, with pre-orders following shortly afterwards.
It goes on sale in the UK on 11 August 2023. At launch, prices are £1,049 for 256GB of storage, or £1,149 for 512GB. That’s a £50 increase over the previous year’s launch prices for the Galaxy Z Flip4, though this time around you get more storage (with Samsung getting rid of the 128GB model).
Don’t want to splash the cash all in one go? You can get the Galaxy Z Flip5 on a pay-monthly contract from a range of networks – compare your options in our table at the top of this page. That way, you can spread the cost over a series of months.
How good is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5's design and display?
Of course, the standout features of any foldable phone are its unique design and expansive display.
The Galaxy Z Flip5 debuts a 3.4-inch Super AMOLED screen on the outside, called a ‘Flex Window’. It’s the largest cover screen to be featured on a Galaxy Z Flip yet – and not only is it eye-catching, but it’s also eminently useful.
With the Flex Window, you can use your phone without having to flip it open. As well as messaging, you can use it to access specially designed widgets and check your rear-camera selfies. Plus, you can customise it to your heart’s content, with widgets, video wallpapers and clock faces.
The hinge is better than ever. While most clamshell foldables have a bit of a gap when closed (including the previous Flip iterations), the improved teardrop hinge mechanism allows you to fold the phone completely flat. We’re sure this feature will be hugely satisfying when hanging up on someone.
Some things have remained unchanged, however. When unfolded, the Galaxy Z Flip5 reveals a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X 120Hz display – while it makes for great viewing, it’s the same as the Galaxy Z Flip4’s screen. It’s also still IPX8-rated for dust and water resistance – meaning that while it has great water resistance, it’s not totally dust-resistant.
The handset comes in four colours: Graphite, Cream, Mint and Lavender. According to Samsung, these hues are “inspired by the natural world”. And if you buy your phone directly from Samsung, you have your pick of four online exclusive colourways (Grey, Blue, Green and Yellow).
How good is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5's camera?
Like the Galaxy Z Flip4, the Flip5 features a dual 12MP rear camera set-up, as well as a 10MP selfie lens.
Although the megapixels remain the same, there are a few improvements which should translate into better quality images. This includes a better aperture on the selfie camera (f/2.2 to the Z Flip4’s f/2.4), an improved main sensor, and an updated image signal processor thanks to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset.
The resulting images are very pleasing, showcasing good dynamic range and reliable quality in all sorts of lighting conditions. As is usual with Samsung’s handsets, colours are very vivid – sure, sometimes on the oversaturated side, but they look great for sharing on social media.
The Z Flip5 also makes use of its clamshell form factor to allow for hands-free selfies. Called ‘FlexCam’, simply prop up the phone on any surface in an L-shape, and you’ll be able to view and capture selfies using the rear camera and Flex Window.
However, it lacks the extra telephoto lens found on the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold5, meaning you won’t get that optical zoom.
Is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 good for video?
The main camera comes with optical image stabilisation (OIS), with the ability to shoot Ultra HD (4K) stabilised footage at 30fps. The resulting footage is very good quality, with a lot of detail, great dynamic range, and nicely saturated colours. Even at night, the video retains an impressive level of detail.
Both the main and selfie cameras can also shoot 4K at 60fps. However, the video is unstabilised, so it’s best to avoid walking while recording. Instead, use the 30fps option for stabilised, smooth video.
The ultrawide camera also produces decent video footage, though it’s not the sharpest.
Overall, the Galaxy Z Flip5 does a pretty good job of shooting video. However, if you’re a dedicated streamer or YouTuber, you may want a phone that can reliably capture better-quality footage.
What are the key differences between the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4?
Although at a glance there doesn’t seem to be many differences between the Galaxy Z Flip5 and its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Flip4, there are a few key upgrades worth noting:
- External display – The small 1.9-inch display on the Galaxy Z Flip4 has been replaced with the 3.4-inch Flex Window. As well as being much larger, it’s much more useful
- Refined, improved design – Thanks to the better ‘Flex Hinge’, the Galaxy Z Flip5 can fold completely flat. That also makes it thinner than the Flip4 when shut, going from 17.1mm to 15.1mm
- Newer chipset – The Galaxy Z Flip5 is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, a step up from the Z Flip 4’s Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1. This means a more efficient battery life and better all-round performance
How does the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 compare to flagship handsets in the UK?
The Galaxy Z Flip5 was launched alongside the Galaxy Z Fold5, a larger handset that unfolds like a book.
Of course, the Z Flip5 is much more pocketable. However, the Z Fold5 is almost like a small tablet when unfolded, which is heaps better for multitasking and productivity. Plus, the Z Fold5’s triple camera system comes with telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom.
Released earlier in the same year, the Galaxy S23 Ultra is a traditional ‘candy bar’ phone – no flipping or folding to be seen here. However, it boasts tons of power, including one of the best camera systems featured in a smartphone, plus S-pen stylus support for handwritten notes and doodles.
MoneySuperMarket's expert rating
Our rating: 4/5
Price-wise, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 one of the more expensive phones on the market. And although its unique foldable design and functionality sets it apart from the crowd, some of its more basic features aren’t quite as strong as those in traditional phones.
For example, its battery life is merely ok, and the camera lacks the extra telephoto lens and optical zoom found in other flagships.
Nevertheless, the re-engineered hinge design and new external cover display makes the Z Flip5 feel like a fresh and exciting upgrade from the previous year’s model. It looks more polished and refined than ever, and the larger cover display unlocks a whole new world of flip phone functionality.
If you’re looking for something different from the traditional smartphone, you’ll have a lot of fun with the Z Flip5.
Contract options
Looking to spread the cost of a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 with a pay-monthly contract? We have loads of options for you to compare.
Can I get the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 with no upfront cost?
Potentially, yes. While you usually need to pay an upfront cost for flagship phone contract, some networks do have no upfront cost phone deals.
Deals with no upfront cost can change quite frequently. So, you should shop around and compare deals to find the best one with nothing to pay upfront.
Just set the slider in the filters above to only show deals with no upfront costs.
Can I get the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 with unlimited data?
Absolutely – plenty of networks offer the Galaxy Z Flip5 with unlimited data.
You can find an unlimited data deal on the Galaxy Z Flip5 with our comparison table at the top of the page. Just move the slider above to unlimited (or very high) data to see all your options.
What's the cheapest way to get the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5?
In general, the cheapest way of getting any phone is to buy it outright and off-contract, then get a SIM-only deal with a monthly allowance of data, minutes and texts.
However, buying a phone outright is a lot of cash to splash in one go. If you’d prefer to spread the cost over the course of several months, it’s worth considering a pay-monthly phone contract instead.
Use our comparison table at the top of this page to find and compare pay-monthly Galaxy Z Flip5 deals.
Can I get the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 with poor credit?
Possibly, though it might be difficult. Networks typically run credit checks before accepting you for a mobile contract.
As the Galaxy Z Flip5 is a pricey flagship phone, it’s unlikely that you’ll be accepted for a contract if you have a bad credit rating. If that’s the case, our bad credit phones guide can help.
Is now a good time to buy the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5?
If you’re thinking of trying out a foldable device, now’s certainly a good time to buy the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5. It’s one of the 2023 foldables released by Samsung, so you’ll be getting a lot of high-tech features to play around with.
It’s also set to get five years of software updates, so there’s plenty of longevity with this device.
If you’re hesitant about the high price tag, however, it may be worth considering the previous year’s model instead – especially if you can get it for a lower price. The Galaxy Z Flip4 offers a similar clamshell folding design, as well as a comparable display and camera system.
Will the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 drop in price?
Phones usually drop in price when newer models are released. In the case of Samsung foldables, these are typically launched around August every year. So, if you want to snap up the Galaxy Z Flip5 for a lower price, it may be worth waiting until then.
You might also find special offers during certain times of the year, such as Black Friday.
