Why choose Plusnet broadband?
Plusnet may fall under the BT Group umbrella, but what it offers is just a little different from its sibling BT broadband. With Plusnet, you get simple, low-cost broadband packages, and famously Yorkshire-based customer service.
You won’t get as many bells and whistles, or the kind of impressive tech and features, that you can expect from larger (and more expensive) providers. But you do have access to a good range of speeds – including options – at good prices.
Pros and cons of Plusnet broadband
-
Pros of Plusnet broadband
Low prices: Plusnet is one of the most budget-friendly broadband providers on the market
Fast full fibre packages: You can get ultrafast download speeds up to an amazing 900Mbps, in areas where full fibre is available – and it’s just as competitively priced
Still offers ADSL: At the other end of the scale, basic ADSL broadband (average speeds 10Mbps) is still available from Plusnet, to connect those areas where fibre broadband is still not rolled out
Widely available: Because it uses the nationwide Openreach network, Plusnet is available in some form to just about everyone
Simple, broadband-only packages: There are no landlines with Plusnet, and not much of anything else at all. The provider offers very simple, straightforward packages that are easy to get your head around
Good track record for customer service: Plusnet is no longer top of the class here, but its customer service has a record of good stats, according to Ofcom reports
Add an EE SIM: Want a SIM-only deal too? As a Plusnet customer you can get special discounts on mobile SIM plans from EE

Cons of Plusnet broadband
Only has 24-month contracts available online: You can get 12-month ones, but they aren’t available online and are significantly more expensive, costing roughly £20 per month more plus additional setup fees. For Plusnet’s low prices, you’re looking at a two-year commitment
Not the best tech: The router supplied when you sign up will get you online with good speeds just fine, but it’s generally a slightly outdated BT hand-me-down. Better tech is available from bigger providers – albeit for a higher price
No home phone: Some VoIP options are available via Plusnet if you’re reliant on a phone line, which give you a digital phone connection using your internet line. But these come from a separate company, and they cost extra. Note that a number of other providers offer this themselves for a cheaper price
No other bundling options: You can’t get TV from Plusnet, for example – unlike other budget providers such as TalkTalk and NOW
How fast is Plusnet broadband?
Plusnet offers a huge range of broadband speeds, with something to suit every household. The exact speeds available to you will depend on your area – be sure to run a postcode check using our tool to see what you can get.

Unlimited Broadband (average download speeds of 10Mbps)
ADSL broadband, only available for properties that aren’t connected to fibre
Fibre (66Mps)
Standard fibre optic broadband, ideal for smaller homes
Full Fibre 74 (74Mbps)
Plusnet’s entry-level full fibre package. Although it’s not much faster than its standard fibre broadband, you get the extra reliability of a full fibre connection
Full Fibre 145 (145Mbps)
A faster full fibre package for those that want a bit of a boost
Full Fibre 300 (300Mbps)
Even faster, and worth considering if you rely on fast internet for working from home, connecting lots of devices, streaming in 4K quality, or gaming
Full Fibre 500 (500Mbps)
Yet faster, ideal for very large households
Full Fibre 900 (900Mbps)
Plusnet’s top-end gigabit package, for those that seriously rely on ultrafast broadband to send and receive massive files, or stream or game without a hitch
If you don’t want Plusnet…
If you’re looking for decent broadband without paying through the nose, the best thing to do is . Sort the results by cost to see the cheapest options available to you. Look out for other wallet-friendly providers such as TalkTalk, NOW, Shell, and Vodafone.
Got your eye on those fast speeds? The good news is that ultrafast, full fibre broadband is increasingly available from more providers. If you can get ultrafast speeds from Plusnet, that likely means you can also get them from other Openreach-based providers – such as BT or Sky. If not, you may be connected by an independent network such as Virgin Media, Hyperoptic, or Cuckoo.
Want to add TV to your broadband? Check out Virgin Media or Sky for some nice big TV bundling options – or TalkTalk, Vodafone, or NOW for something simple on a budget.
