Design
As with many phone releases these days, the latest Samsung Galaxy S23 doesn't stray far from the design of the previous year’s Galaxy S22. It keeps the flat glass screen and curved metal wraparound frame, creating a phone that's pleasing to the eye and feels great in your hand.
Still, the Galaxy S23 has done away with the metal contour cut camera module found on the S22 and S21 models. Instead, the S23 follows the same camera design as the S23 Ultra, with each camera lens embedded in the body of the phone.
It comes in four colourways: Green, Cream, Phantom Black and Lavender. There’s also two exclusive Samsung.com colours: Lime and Graphite.
Display
The Galaxy S23 has a flat 6.1-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity-O Display, making it one of the more pint-sized phones on the market.
There’s also an excellent 120Hz refresh rate and a screen resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels. It’s made from the durable Gorilla Glass Victus 2, which should help the phone withstand everyday wear and tear.
Camera
Hardware-wise, the rear cameras on the Galaxy S23 remain the same: a 50MP f/1.8 wide lens, a 12MP f/2.2 ultra wide lens, and a 10MP f/2.4 telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom.
But thanks to the phone’s new processor, photo processing is more powerful than before. This means you'll get clearer shots when shooting at night and in low light.
Plus, the Phone's Expert Raw mode can now support 50MP snaps, allowing you to capture even more detail when shooting in the RAW file format – something keen photographers are sure to appreciate.
The selfie camera has also been upgraded to 12MP. Given that selfie resolution has stayed the same since the Galaxy S10 in 2019, this is a much-welcome upgrade.
Specs
The Galaxy S23 is powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. This is a step up from the previous generations, and it means a more powerful performance all-round.
Using apps and mobile gaming should feel faster than ever, and the phone will be able to handle intensive multi-tasking with ease. The new chip also unlocks powerful image processing, taking your smartphone photography to the next level.
Battery capacity is also up from last year’s Galaxy S22, now standing at 3,900mAh. It supports 25W charging, as well as wireless charging up to 15W. It's not the fastest-charging on the market, but it beats the iPhone 14.
It ships with Android 13, Google’s latest operating system, as well as a new version of One UI (One UI 5.1). It’s set to receive four major OS upgrades and five years of security patches after launch, meaning that Samsung will support the Galaxy S23 until at least 2028.
Moneysupermarket's expert view
With its new processor, better battery and advanced photographic capabilities, the Galaxy S23 marks a strong start to 2023’s phone releases. It’s a solid contender to the iPhone 14 – whether you prefer Android or iOS, that’s your call.

What’s the difference between Samsung Galaxy S23 and Samsung Galaxy S22?
One big difference is the chipset, with this year’s Galaxy S23 being powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. This should mean snappier performance, as well as even more advanced photography capabilities.
You’ll be pleased to hear that the Galaxy S23 has also been given a modest bump up in battery capacity, featuring a 3,900mAh cell compared to the Galaxy S22’s 3,700 battery. When coupled with a new processor and power efficiency measures, it should help give the battery life a much-needed boost.
There’s also an upgraded selfie camera – 12MP to the Galaxy S22’s 10MP.
Is the Samsung Galaxy S23 worth buying in 2023?
At the time of writing (February 2023), the Galaxy S23 is Samsung’s base flagship handset for 2023.
If you’re due an upgrade and want to get your hands on the latest and greatest, there’s no question about it – the Samsung Galaxy S23 is a great pick.
However, if you own the previous year’s Galaxy S22, the updates might not be big enough to justify upgrading just yet.
