The end of winter often brings good news – warmer weather, longer days, and in the last few years, new Samsung Galaxy handsets.
This year is no different, with Samsung celebrating the 10th anniversary of their renowned ‘S’ series by launching the Galaxy S10 range. The line-up includes:
- Samsung Galaxy S10: the flagship model
- Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus: the upmarket version
- Samsung Galaxy S10e: the cheaper option
The tech giant also announced two further handsets:
- Samsung Galaxy S10 5G: a handset featuring new 5G connectivity
- Samsung Galaxy X: an innovative device with a foldable screen
Here’s what Samsung have revealed about their flagship phone, the Samsung Galaxy S10.
Release and cost
Having been announced on 20 February at Samsung’s Unpacked event, the release date for the Samsung Galaxy S10 range is 8 March.
The S10 model is on sale for £799, £60 more than the S9 when it was launched last year.
Design
Samsung’s Galaxy S10 sports a 6.1 inch Super AMOLED display, with a QHD+ resolution, that takes up almost the entire face of the phone. Gone are the notch cut-out, instead being replaced by a laser-cut hole on the top right of the screen that gives the display its name – Infinity-O.
While the screen might be bigger, the size of the handset itself is only slightly bigger than its predecessor – it measures at 149.9 x 70.4 x 7.8mm and weighs in at 157g, making it thinner and lighter.
The phone is available in the following colours (though it could vary by region):
- Flamingo pink
- Prism black
- Prism blue
- Prism white
- Prism green
- Canary yellow
Features
The Galaxy S10’s rear camera contains three lenses set into a small bump – the first is a regular 12MP lens, the second is a 12MP optically zoomed telephoto lens, and the third is an ultra-wide 16MP lens. The front camera contains a single 10MP lens with dual autofocus capabilities.
You’ll get upgraded video recording, with the phone capable of recording in HDR10+ and using Digital Video Stabilisation to make smooth Ultra HD videos.
The Infinity-O display contains a new ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, which is said to be more secure than the older optical scanning technology.
One of the most exciting features of the phone is its Wireless PowerShare feature. You’ll be able to use the back of the phone to wirelessly charge another phone, or the new range of wireless Galaxy Buds.
However it’s worth noting that if your phone battery is below 30% the PowerShare feature won’t work.Another welcome feature that isn’t new but is becoming increasingly rarer – the phone will include a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Tech specs
In terms of the phone’s technical features and specifications, the phone sees a number of upgrades from the S9. Depending on the region, the S10 will either use the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 or Exynos 9820 chipset – both are top of the line and very fast.
It’ll come with 8GB of RAM, and either 128GB or 512GB of storage – with the option of adding external storage.
The S10 also uses a 3,400mAh battery, which will offer all-day battery life according to Samsung. In terms of connectivity, the phone will include the next gen Wi-Fi 6 technology that could give you a 20% speed boost, though you’ll likely need a new router to take advantage of this.
