iPhone 12 vs iPhone 11: What are the key differences?

Pick up the iPhone 12 and the difference between it and the iPhone 11 are immediately obvious.

It features a more squared off design that looks a lot more cutting edge than the rounded finish of the iPhone 11, giving it a premium feel.

The screen is where the iPhone 12 really stands out though, utilising OLED tech to make it look far better than the iPhone 11.

Although the dual lens 12MP cameras are broadly the same on each model, the iPhone 12 serves up better pictures thanks to its snappier A14 processor.

Overall, performance feels even quicker, with a noticeable zip to proceedings when opening apps and playing games.

iPhone 12 vs iPhone 11 design

This is where the iPhone 12 and iPhone 11 really differ. Apple opted for a new look with the iPhone 12, one which harks back to the finish of the classic iPhone 4.

That means it moved away from the rounded edges and old school looks of the iPhone 11 for something a bit more industrial.

The result is something that truly stands out from the crowd. So much so that it kept the design for 2021’s iPhone 13.

The iPhone 12 pulls off the trick of making the iPhone 11 look dated, even though the latter remains an excellent device.

iPhone 12 vs iPhone 11 camera

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 11 both come with dual 12MP lenses.

However, the iPhone 12’s wider sensor features a f/1.6 aperture, meaning it allows more light in, the result being markedly better pictures when it’s dark or late at night.

The A14 chipset also helps to ensure the iPhone 12 serves up better overall shots compared with the iPhone 11.

We particularly like the night mode option on the iPhone 12, as it makes the most of the wider sensor and delivers excellent results consistently.

iPhone 12 vs iPhone 11 screen display

Put an iPhone 12 and iPhone 11 up against each other and you’ll immediately notice the difference between the screens.

While the iPhone 11 packs an old school LCD, the iPhone 12 uses OLED.

That means that while each screen measures 6.1-inches, the resolution and pixel density on the iPhone 12 is far superior, coming in at 1,170 x 2,532 compared with 828 x 1,792.

In the real world, that translates into richer colours, better looking games and eye popping video.

iPhone 12 vs iPhone 11 battery life and performance

Surprisingly, the newer iPhone 12 comes with a smaller battery than the iPhone 11, 2815mAh versus 3110mAh.

While Apple says the battery life is identical, thanks to the prowess of its A14 chipset, in reality the iPhone 12 doesn’t last as long.

That’s down to the fact it has more cutting edge tech, like 5G and OLED, meaning it drains power slightly faster. Either way, you’ll need to charge each phone once a day.

In terms of overall performance, though, the iPhone 12 is a cut above. The aforementioned A14 is faster than the iPhone 11’s A13 processor, meaning it’s better at multitasking and running more powerful, power hungry apps and games.

iPhone 12 vs iPhone 11 software

Because Apple has put such stock in making its iOS platform last for longer on older iPhones, both models can handle iOS 15 with aplomb.

That means you can make the most of features like Focus, which allows for more targeted notification silencing, when you need to concentrate.

However, as the iPhone 12 is newer, it will enjoy iOS support for longer. That’s something to consider if you don’t like upgrading your iPhone every couple of years.

iPhone 12 vs iPhone 11 verdict

The iPhone 11 is an excellent phone. But, battery life aside, the iPhone 12 is a better phone in every way.

It has a more powerful processor, a more striking screen, its design is more modern and the overall feel of the device is simply more impressive than its older sibling.

The fact you can now get it on some excellent, affordable deals, makes it easy to recommend.
