The Samsung Galaxy A54 measures 158.2 x 76.7 x 8.2mm.

It’s smaller than the Galaxy A53, yet heavier. Weighing in at 202g, it’s definitely a bit more substantial in hand. Nevertheless, it’s still comfortable to hold, and the overall construction feels strong and durable.

Its screen measures 6.4 inches diagonally, which is slightly smaller than the A53’s 6.5-inch display.

How good is the Samsung Galaxy A54 Camera?

Sporting three lenses, the Galaxy A54 has one less camera sensor than the A53. Not to mention, the new 50MP main camera sensor replaces the previous year’s 64MP affair.

On paper, it seems like a step down rather than an upgrade. However, the slight drop in resolution is more than compensated for, thanks to a larger sensor and improved optical image stabilisation. This all means the A54 can produce better quality photos, particularly in low light and at night-time.

How good is the Samsung Galaxy A54 Design?

Previously, Samsung has always made the design of its mid-range handsets different from that of its main flagship line. However, this year, Samsung has brought the Galaxy A54’s design in line with the Galaxy S23 range.

Instead of the protruding camera bump found on the Galaxy A53, the A54 features the same individual floating lens design as the Galaxy S23 handsets. Whether that’s an improvement is up to personal taste, but it’s an undeniably sleek look. The front features a hole punch selfie camera at the top.

This time, there’s Gorilla Glass 5 on both the front and back. Not only does this ensure the A54 is well-protected from scratches and drops, but it also gives the phone a premium build quality that’s reminiscent of the more expensive S23 line (the A53 was mainly built with a sturdy plastic).

As well as the standard black and white (named Awesome Graphite and Awesome White, respectively), the A54 comes in two other funky colours: Awesome Lime and Awesome Violet. These eye-catching colour options help make the A54 stand out.

It sports an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance. That’s not the highest level of water resistance – flagship handsets come with the maximum IP68 rating – but it’s the same as the previous year’s A53.

How good is the Samsung Galaxy A54 Display?

As is typical with Samsung handsets, the Galaxy A54 has an attractive screen that delivers vibrant colours and excellent contrast. Image sharpness remains the same as the Galaxy A53.

There’s a bump in brightness, with the screen now topping out at 1,000 nits – making for great viewing even in direct sunlight.

How good is the Samsung Galaxy A54 battery life?

The Galaxy A54 boasts a generous 5,000mAh battery – the same as the previous year’s Galaxy A53. Coupled with new optimised software, it should last for up to two days of normal use on a single charge. That’s longer lasting than the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus.

It supports 25W fast charging – the same speed as the standard Galaxy S23 – though there’s still no wireless charging.

What are the key differences between the Galaxy A54 and the Galaxy A53?

There are several notable differences between the Galaxy A54 and its predecessor, including:

Apple’s iPhone SE (2022) is its most budget-friendly option, and it squeezes some top features in its small frame, such as a good camera and powerful A15 Bionic chip. It’s a decent option if you’re set on an Apple device without the sky-high cost, though it’s not particularly exciting.

As per usual, Google presents some strong competition with the Google Pixel 6a, another popular mid-range option. It’s one of the best-value Android handsets on the market, offering excellent photo quality and Google’s very own Tensor chip. Not to mention, the Pixel 7a should be just around the corner – we’re sure it’ll be another high-quality mid-ranger.

With the Galaxy A54, Samsung has created a stellar mid-range device that proves you don’t need to splash the cash to get a high-quality handset.

There’s plenty going for it: a brilliantly capable camera system, attractive display, and a battery life that outlasts the more expensive S23 and S23 Plus. All in all, the specs and features suggest a phone that’s more on the high-end side of things – and in some instances, it even beats flagships that are almost twice the price. Indeed, it still has the coveted microSD slot that’s sorely missed on the more costly phones.

True, the price tag has risen from the previous year’s A53. However, we’d say there are enough substantial upgrades to justify the increased cost, especially as these improvements bring it on par with much more expensive handsets on the market.

Furthermore, Samsung has committed to four years of OS updates, as well as five years of security updates. That’s on par with the support offered to Samsung flagships, and it means the Galaxy A54 will have a whole lotta longevity – perfect if you like to hold onto your phone for years to come.
