The iPhone 13 is a substantial improvement on iPhone 12 . Get up to speed with everything it's got to offer with our bite-size round-up of its key features.
The iPhone 13 range brings us a much-improved camera, a substantially bigger battery, more storage and some eye-popping new colours.
Sound worth a look? Read on for the five key things you need to know about this year’s models.
1) Release date and price
There are four variants to choose from, namely the iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. All of which will be available to buy at stores and online from 24th September.
- Phone 13 mini - £679
- iPhone 13 - £779
- iPhone 13 Pro - £949
- iPhone 13 Pro Max - £1,049
2) Colours and design
This year’s models look very similar to the iPhone 12. But with a few notable differences.
Not least of which is smaller notch for the front-facing camera, which means it doesn't eat into the available screen space as much.
There's also a slightly tweaked, diagonal layout of lenses in the rear camera module, as well as a slightly thicker construction.
As for colours, the iPhone 13 and 13 mini are available in a choice of
- Product Red
- Starlight white
- Midnight black
The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max come in:
- Graphite grey
- Sierra Blue
iPhone mini and iPhone 13 are both home to dual camera set-ups, comprising 12-megapixel wide and ultrawide lenses.
The big news here is that the wide camera is now larger and lets in more light, for better shots in low light.
The Pro and Pro Max go one better, though, and add a third, 12-megapixel telephoto lens.
This is much more powerful than the comparable lens on the iPhone 12 Pro models and makes for much clearer zoomed-in, macro shots.
Display dimensions are in line with last year’s crop of iPhones. Albeit with that smaller notch that we mentioned above.
That means the iPhone 13 mini’s screen comes in at 5.4 inches, while the standard iPhone 13 packs in a 6.1-inch display.
At the higher-end of the range, the Pro and Pro Max will make room for 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch screens, respectively.
All models have an improved refresh rate, which means the screen will look smoother when you’re scrolling through social media or playing games on the move.
5) Battery and storage
More powerful phones need more powerful batteries. With that in mind, Apple has boosted battery capacity across the board.
Here’s how this year’s models shape up, compared with 2020’s line-up:
|Model||Dimensions||Last year's dimensions|
|iPhone 13 mini||2,406mAh||2,277mAh|
|iPhone 13 Pro||3,095mAh||2,805mAh|
|iPhone 13 Pro Max||4,325mAh||3,687mAh|
All iPhone 13 variants offer faster wired and wireless charging. And storage space has been supersized too, with the top of the range models equipped with a whopping 1TB of capacity.
