All homes in Hull will have access to fibre optic broadband. What’s more, KCOM’s network is 100% fibre. This means all its packages are full fibre broadband, using fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) technology.
What is FTTP? This is a fibre connection that uses fibre cables all the way between the exchange to your home, resulting in a much quicker, more stable connection.
It’s a lot faster than the more common fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) broadband, which uses older copper wires to connect your home to a nearby cabinet. Our page on FTTP and FTTC goes into the differences between the two.
So, no matter where you live in Hull, you should be able to get high quality home broadband.
Well, given the limited availability of broadband in Hull, there’s only one real choice: KCOM.
It’s on the pricier side, unfortunately. However, it does offer a decent selection of fast and ultrafast fibre broadband packages, with speeds ranging from 30Mbps to 900Mbps. You can also bundle it with a phone line and TV if you like.
There are also a few smaller independent providers in the area – however, some of these use KCOM’s network to provide their services anyway.
Although Hull is a city, you won’t find the big names like Virgin Media, BT or Sky in this area. That’s because for historical reasons, the region of Hull and East Riding doesn’t have BT’s Openreach or Virgin Media infrastructures. It’s a pretty unique situation – Hull is the only place in the UK that isn’t covered by BT.
As a result, you won’t be able to get deals from any broadband provider using the Openreach network – which includes most household-name providers, such as EE, Sky, TalkTalk and Plusnet. Nor will you be able to get broadband from Virgin Media.
In fact, the main – and only – broadband provider in Hull is KCOM, a specialist telecoms provider that primarily serves customers in Hull and East Yorkshire. Luckily, it’s among the UK’s speediest providers, offering lightning-fast full fibre broadband.
