Greater London postcodes top list of burglary hotspots

Londoners need to be on their guard against burglars, according to the latest MoneySuperMarket Burglary Claims Tracker.

Postcodes in the east of Greater London and Essex are particularly prone to making burglary-related claims on their home contents insurance – but those living in rural areas such as Dumfries in Scotland and Felixstowe in Suffolk can sleep more easily in the beds, paying less for their home insurance.

Let’s find out why…

Capital crimes

Greater London has the dubious honour of being home to 14 of the UK’s top 20 burglary claim hotspots.

This includes Dagenham, where 55 of every 1,000 home insurance quotes run on our site in the 12 months to December contained details of a claim for burglary claim made in the past two years.

London is not the only city where burglaries are common, however.

Chorlton-cum-Hardy and Barlow Moor in Manchester – where about 52 of every 1,000 home insurance quotes contains a claim for burglary – are third on the hotspot list.

And people living in parts of South and West Yorkshire are also more likely than most to have to file a claim for theft from their homes.

Burglary hotspots – and coldspots

Our Burglary Claims Tracker looks at millions of home insurance quotes to identify the postcodes where homeowners are most likely to make a claim after being burgled.

This year, researchers analysed 2.68 million quotes, identifying those recording “theft of contents” claims, to come up with the burglary hotspots list.

Their findings show that the top five postcodes targeted by burglars are:

1. TM8 (Dagenham in Greater London)

2. IG2 (Gants Hill in Greater London)

3. M21 (Chorlton-cum-Hardy in Manchester)

4. DN2 (Intake in South Yorkshire)

5. E18 (Woodford in London)

At the bottom of the list, meanwhile, are rural locations such as:

1. DD2 (Lochee in Scotland)

2. DG1 (Dumfries in Scotland)

3. G83 Aldochlay in Scotland

4. IP11 (Felixstowe in Suffolk)

5. LL57 (Bangor in Wales)

Impact on insurance

Having a higher likelihood of their homes being broken into is not the only problem for those living in burglary hotspots.

Insurers also factor in the probability of a burglary claim when pricing insurance policies.

And that means someone living in Dagenham will pay a lot more for home insurance than someone living in Dumfries.

If you live in a burglary hotspot, it therefore makes sense to take steps to lower your insurance premiums – and slash your chances of being burgled – by improving your home security.

Many insurers will offer you a discount if you fit an insurer-approved alarm or upgrade your door and window locks, for example.

Why not get your own quote for home insurance to see whether you can lower your annual premium?
