HEAT PUMP TARIFFS

The smarter way to power your heat pump

  • Power your heat pump for less

What is a heat pump tariff?

If your home has a heat pump choosing a heat pump tariff can make a big difference to your bills.

A heat pump energy tariff is designed for households with air source or ground source systems, offering lower rates at particular times of day. That means you can power your heat pump for less by shifting usage to cheaper off-peak periods.

In order to use a heat pump tariff you will need a smart meter capable of half-hourly readings.

Which suppliers offer heat pump tariffs?

These tariffs aren’t always branded “heat pump tariffs,” but many can help reduce running costs when paired with a heat pump. Always check with suppliers for the latest timings and rates.

  • OVO

Heat Pump Plus is a tariff add-on that charges just 15p per kWh for the electricity your heat pump uses at any time of day. This offers ends on 1 February 2026.

  • ScottishPower

ScottishPower’s Heat Pump Saver gives you electricity at 14p per kWh between 11am and 4pm every day.

  • EDF

EDF’s Heat Pump Tracker tariff gives you electricity 10p per kWh cheaper than your region's standard tariff between 4am and 7am and 1pm to 4pm every day.

  • Octopus

The Cosy Octopus tariff has three off-peak periods each day when power is 51% cheaper than the day rate in your region, from 4am to 7am, 1pm to 4pm, and 10pm to 12am. But a peak rate operates from 4pm to 7pm, when it's 50% more expensive than your region's day rate.

  • E.ON Next

E.ON offers a Next Pumped tariff that gives households off peak energy rates from 6am to 4pm, when you'll pay a lower price than the standard rate (Next Flex). Beware: From 4pm to 7pm you'll pay a rate above the standard rate.

  • British Gas

The British Gas heat pump tariff offers half price electricity every day from 1pm to 4pm and 12am to 7am.

How to switch energy provider

Whether you’re looking for cheaper rates, greener energy, or more flexible terms, the switching process is simpler than you might think.

  • Decide what to change

Choose whether to switch to a new supplier or pick a different tariff with your current one. What matters most to you? Price? Flexibility? Green credentials?

  • Check your current deal

If you’re on a standard variable tariff, you can switch anytime; if it’s fixed, check if there’s an exit fee.

  • Compare deals

Compare tariffs with MoneySuperMarket. Consider price, customer service, and special features like EV charging or green energy.

  • Sign up with a new provider

Apply online or by phone. Your new supplier will handle the switch, and you’ll have 14 days to change your mind.

  • Finalise the switch

Choose your switch date, take a meter reading, and pay your final bill. If your old supplier owes you money, they must refund you within 10 working days of your final bill.

  • Know your rights

If your switch is delayed, you may get £40 compensation. You can cancel within the cooling-off period without a fee.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a special tariff for a heat pump?

No. A few suppliers market tariffs for heat pumps, but many standard time-of-use or smart tariffs also work well to reduce costs if you can use more electricity during off-peak hours.

Do I need a smart meter for a heat pump tariff?

Yes. Almost all heat pump electricity tariffs require a smart meter that can record half-hourly data. This ensures your supplier bills you correctly for usage.

Are heat pumps expensive to run?

Not if you’re on the right tariff. Heat pumps are much more efficient than boilers, and with a time-of-use tariff they can be cheaper to run than gas heating.

Can I combine a heat pump tariff with solar panels?

Yes. Pairing solar with a heat pump tariff can cut costs further. You can use solar to power the heat pump during the day and a cheap overnight tariff to heat water or charge a battery.

What’s the best tariff for a heat pump?

It depends on your usage. If you’re flexible, a time-of-use tariff (like the ones mentioned above) is usually the cheapest. If your usage is steady, a flat-rate tariff may suit you better. Always compare to find the best fit for your home.
