Do I need Cockapoo pet insurance?

Pet insurance isn't a legal requirement in the UK. But it can help cover unexpected costs if your Cockapoo becomes ill, is injured or is involved in an incident.

Depending on your policy, Cockapoo insurance can cover costs if:

  • Your Cockapoo is ill, injured or needs to be put down

  • Your Cockapoo is lost or stolen

  • Your Cockapoo harms someone or damages their property, including their pets

Are Cockapoos expensive to insure?

No, Cockapoos can be relatively inexpensive to insure compared with the average dog.

The price you pay will depend on factors such as your Cockapoo’s age, health and where you live, as well as the type of cover you choose.

The average cost of dog insurance is £12.33[6] a month. Cockapoo insurance costs an average of £10.29[5] a month, which is around £1.78 less.

What impacts the cost of pet insurance?

Some factors that change the price you pay for pet insurance are:

  • The type of cover you select

  • Your pet's age

  • Your pet's breed

  • If your pet has any history of aggression

  • If your pet has any pre-existing medical conditions

  • Your location

  • Your claim history

On average, owners of aggressive pets pay 8.50%[7] more for their pet insurance. A pet that has had complaints made about it will cost its owners 6.34%[7] more.

How can I get cheaper pet insurance?

Some ways to reduce the price of your pet insurance premiums include:

  • Compare quotes

  • Select a multi-pet policy

  • Select an accident-only policy

  • Maintain your pet's health

  • Increase your excess

  • Pay annually

  • Spay or neuter your pet

Spaying or neutering your pets will reduce your insurance costs by an average of 0.56%[7] on average.

You can find much bigger savings of up to 40.41%[8] by selecting an accident-only insurance policy, but you will get much more limited cover.

What is the most common pet insurance claim for Cockapoos?

These are the most common claims made on Cockapoo pet insurance, according to The Insurance Emporium.

Claim type

Claim amount

Cushing's Disease

£228[10]

Immune polyarthritis

£180[10]

Diabetes

£242[10]

Hip Dysplasia

£155[10]

Will my pet insurance cover all these illnesses and accidents?

Accident-only policies cover injuries such as broken bones or burns, but they won’t cover illnesses like diabetes. So if your Cockapoo developed diabetes, you’d need to pay an average of £242[10] yourself.

Time-limited and maximum benefit policies do include illness cover, but only up to a fixed time period or payout limit. Once you hit that limit, ongoing and recurring conditions like Cushing's Disease won’t be covered anymore. This could leave you facing repeated out-of-pocket costs of £228[10].

Lifetime policies renew the vet fee limit every year, meaning you can continue claiming for long-term conditions. However, premiums tend to rise annually, and changing insurer usually means existing conditions will no longer be covered.

What does Cockapoo insurance cover?

Cover varies by provider and policy, so always check your insurance documents.

  • Typically covered

✔ Vet billse.g. medicines, treatments and prescriptions

    ✔ Hospital visits

    ✔ Diagnosing illnesses e.g. consultations, X-rays, MRIs

✔ Dental treatment for accidents, like breaking a tooth

✔ Alternative therapies e.g. hydrotherapy or acupuncture (when recommended by a vet)

    ✔ Euthanasia (putting pets down)

✔ Lost and stolen pets e.g. advertising, rewards, refund of purchase price

✔ Third party liability cover e.g. your dog harms someone or their property

✔ Emergency boarding fees e.g. if you are unexpectedly hospitalised

  • Not typically covered

    ✖ Pre-existing conditions

✖ Routine care e.g. pet vaccinations, boosters, regular check-ups

✖ Routine dental treatment including routine check-ups

    ✖ Fleas and worming

    ✖ Neutering or spaying

    ✖ Elective or cosmetic treatments

    ✖ Cremation and burial

    ✖ Training and obedience classes

✖ Banned breeds or dog breeds classed as dangerous

    ✖ Unvaccinated or unmicrochipped animals

Can I get pet insurance if my Cockapoo has a pre-existing condition?

Yes. You can often still get pet insurance if your Cockapoo has a pre-existing condition, although standard policies are unlikely to cover treatment related to it.

If you want the condition itself covered, you may need specialist pet insurance. These policies can cost more and may have limits or exclusions, so check the policy wording carefully.

Can I get pet insurance if my Cockapoo is aggressive?

Possibly. Some insurers will still offer cover if your Cockapoo has shown aggressive behaviour, but you should declare its behavioural history accurately when getting a quote.

Aggression or previous incidents could affect your premium or the cover available, particularly third-party liability cover.

What health issues do Cockapoos have?

Cockapoos can inherit health problems associated with both Cocker Spaniels and Poodles. Conditions they may be affected by include:

  • Ear infections

  • Skin allergies and itchy skin

  • Eye conditions

  • Hip dysplasia

  • Luxating patellas

  • Digestive problems

A large Royal Veterinary College study found that Cockapoos and other popular Poodle crosses were not generally healthier than their parent breeds. Cockapoos had a higher likelihood of ear infections than their non-Poodle parent breed and a higher likelihood of itchy skin than both parent breeds.

Are Cockapoos an aggressive dog breed?

Cockapoos aren't inherently aggressive, but that doesn't mean the breed is always placid.

A 2026 Royal Veterinary College study of more than 9,000 UK dogs found that Cockapoos showed higher levels of some aggressive behaviours than their purebred parent breeds, including owner-directed aggression and dog rivalry. A dog's individual temperament, upbringing, socialisation and training will also affect its behaviour.

Only 0.4%[13] of Cockapoo owners report that their dog show signs of aggression such as tackling or biting other people or pets.

Our expert says…

While opting for a cheaper pet insurance policy might save you a few pounds a month, it's a good idea to consider what the policy covers and the actual cost of veterinary care if your pet gets sick.

According to the ABI, the average pet insurance claim in the UK was £685[9] in 2024. That's significantly higher than the average annual cost of cover for a dog (£165.43[14]) or cat (£81.48[15]).

And while that’s the average, some conditions can be far more expensive. For example, treatment for elbow dysplasia, a common condition in large dog breeds, can cost over £50,000, according to the ABI.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Cockapoos make good pets?

Yes, Cockapoos can make good pets for owners who have plenty of time for exercise, training and company.

They're generally lively, intelligent and affectionate, but they aren't necessarily the effortless family dog they're sometimes assumed to be. Their behaviour can vary considerably, so early socialisation and consistent training are important.

How long do Cockapoos live?

Cockapoos typically have a life expectancy of around 12 to 15 years, although an individual dog's lifespan will depend on factors such as genetics, health, diet and veterinary care.

Do Cockapoos need to be microchipped?

Yes. All dogs in the UK must be microchipped and registered on an approved database by the time they're eight weeks old.

You also need to keep the contact details linked to your dog's microchip up to date. You could be fined up to £500 if your dog isn't microchipped when required.

Are Cockapoos high maintenance?

They can be. Cockapoos generally need regular grooming as well as plenty of exercise, mental stimulation and training.

Their coat can mat if it isn't maintained properly, while their energetic and intelligent nature means they can become bored without enough activity.

How much exercise does a Cockapoo need?

Most Cockapoos need around 60 to 90 minutes of exercise a day, alongside play and mental stimulation.

Their exact needs will depend on their age, health, size and which traits they have inherited from their Cocker Spaniel and Poodle parents.

Can Cockapoos be left alone?

Cockapoos can learn to spend some time alone, but many are very people-orientated and can struggle with being separated from their owners.

Build up alone time gradually from an early age rather than suddenly leaving your Cockapoo for long periods.

Are Cockapoos easy to train?

Cockapoos are intelligent and can learn quickly, but that doesn't mean training will always be easy.

Consistent, reward-based training from puppyhood is important. Recent RVC research found Cockapoos didn't show the behavioural advantages over their parent breeds that owners sometimes expect, including for trainability.

How big do Cockapoos get?

Cockapoo size can vary because they're a crossbreed and may have Toy, Miniature or Standard Poodle ancestry.

Many adult Cockapoos are medium-sized dogs, but their eventual height and weight will depend on their parents and generation of cross.

Does MoneySuperMarket work with all the providers on the market?

No, not every company can be included in our service. This is because some companies don’t want their products included on comparison sites, and some decide that they would rather not pay a fee.
