Availability and price
The Google Pixel 4a 5G was released in October in the UK, although pre-orders started from September. The handset is available for £499. Google Pixel 4a 5G contract deals are also available.
Textured plastic back and sides gives the phone a feeling of genuine quality for a mid-range handset, although not quite the recycled aluminium finish of the Google Pixel 5.
The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 3 and at 168g the Pixel 4a 5G is slightly heavier than the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a, but still lightweight.
A fingerprint sensor is on the rear of the phone for security and within easy reach to unlock with one hand, and the camera block at the top left is a now familiar feature in the Pixel range.
The power button and volume rocker are on the phone’s right edge, while the top edge houses the 3.5mm headphone jack. AUSB-C port in the usual position on the bottom edge. The Google Pixel 4a 5G is only available in black.
Like the Google Pixel 5, the Google Pixel 4a 5G has two rear cameras – a 12.2MP f/1.7 main camera with optical image stabilisation, and a 16MP with an ultra-wide f/2.2 lens.
Complete with LED flash and Auto-HDR, these provide depth and quality to the shots and it’s backed up with leading editing software to really give the pictures the finish you desire. Shooting modes include portrait, night sight and panorama.
The front-facing camera is 8MP and f/2.0, which can provide all the selfie snaps you need for social media and for video recording there’s 1080p or 4K at 30fps or 60fps. There are also slow-mo and time-lapse options.
With a mid-range mobile phone processor, the Google Pixel 4a 5G shares the same Snapdragon 765G chipset as the Google Pixel 5.
It runs Android 11 making it – alongside the Pixel 5 – the first phone you can buy with Google’s newest operating system pre-installed. Features include smart home settings and built-in screen recording.
The battery here is 3,885mAh which should cover a full day even with heavy use, and it’s 18W wired charging, which means it takes around an hour to fully charge from zero.
