Ready to say farewell to your Vodafone broadband? Here’s what you need to know about cancelling your package.

Cancelling Vodafone broadband if you’re out of contract

Cancelling Vodafone broadband when you’re outside of the initial timespan of your contract is easy, and you’ll face no fees.

If you’re switching to a different provider, it really couldn’t be easier. Just sign up to your new broadband deal, and the new provider will cancel with Vodafone on your behalf and arrange your switch.

Be aware, though, that while this is always the case when switching between two broadband providers that use the Openreach network (including Vodafone, BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Plusnet, and so on), it isn’t always so. If your new provider runs on a different, independent network – such as Virgin Media, and most full-fibre broadband – you may still need to contact Vodafone separately. Check with your new provider when you sign up.

Meanwhile, if you aren’t switching to a new provider but just want to cancel your Vodafone internet, it’s as simple as contacting Vodafone and telling them you want to cancel.

The only extra work you may have to do is returning your router or other equipment – more on that below.

The first step to cancelling Vodafone broadband and switching to a brand new provider is to compare the best current deals and find one you like.

Cancelling Vodafone broadband if you’re under contract

You’re free to cancel your Vodafone broadband whenever you want, but unfortunately if you do so while you’re still within the minimum terms of your contract, you’ll likely face a penalty fee.

To cancel early, just do so in the usual way – by either signing up to a new deal, or contacting Vodafone. They’ll then be in touch to inform you about your early termination fee.

Vodafone will calculate your fee like this:

  • Add together the cost of all the monthly charges for the remainder of your contract, minus VAT (e.g. if you have three months left on a £20-per-month contract, this figure will be £60)

  • Subtract any savings Vodafone makes as a result of you leaving early, plus a small discount if you send your total final payment early

  • Add VAT back onto the final total

Can I avoid Vodafone’s broadband cancellation fee?

Yes. There are a handful of circumstances when you can cancel your Vodafone broadband early without paying a penalty fee.

If you’re still within the initial cooling-off period – 14 days from your service going live – you can cancel without any penalty fee at all.

Ofcom also has rules that state you can leave your broadband provider early and without penalty if they raise your monthly cost above the rate of inflation. In that case, you can leave within 30 days of being notified of the increase.

Price hikes in line with the rate of inflation, however, are allowed according to your Vodafone contract – you’ll still face fees if you cancel.

There are also rules that state you can cancel your broadband if you’re not getting the speed you’ve been advertised…

Can I cancel for free if my broadband is too slow?

According to Ofcom, yes. If your broadband speed consistently falls below the minimum you were promised when you signed up, and it’s demonstrably a problem on the provider’s side, you’re entitled to cancel without penalty.

In theory, that’s good news – but in practice, it can be very hard to prove.

The best thing to do is to run speed tests and get a record of them, and contact Vodafone every time you’re getting below-par speeds. Follow any advice and guidance they give you.

If, after all that, it’s clearly a problem with Vodafone’s network, you can gather your evidence and get ready to cancel.

How do I contact Vodafone to cancel my broadband subscription?

You can call them on 0333 304 0191, or 191 from a Vodafone mobile. Lines are open 8am-10pm Monday to Friday, or 8am-8pm Saturday and Sunday.

You can also use the live web chat on the Vodafone website.

Can I cancel my broadband without contacting Vodafone?

If you’re switching to a different provider, then yes – you won’t need to contact Vodafone to cancel with them. Just sign up to your new package, and the provider will do the work of contacting and cancelling with Vodafone on your behalf.

However, if you’re just cancelling rather than switching, there’s no way around it – you’ll need to get in touch with Vodafone.

Do I have to return my Vodafone router?

Yes. Vodafone ask that you return any equipment, such as your router or other accessories, when you cancel your broadband. They’ll supply you with a pre-paid envelope to post it back in.

Make sure you do so, as you may face a fine otherwise.
