What extra cover is available with Intelligent Insurance home insurance?

Intelligent Insurance does not offer fixed home insurance tiers. Its standard policies include Family Legal Protection with up to £25,000 of cover and basic Home Emergency cover, which provides up to £250 per call-out and £500 across the policy year.

Home Emergency Plus raises the limit to £1,000 per call-out and £1,000 per year, while it also adds cover for your boiler and heating system, home security and alternative accommodation. Family Legal Protection Plus increases most legal cover limits to £50,000 and covers more disputes, including employment, personal injury, identity fraud, probate and property infringement.

You can also add accidental damage, personal belongings cover for items taken away from home, specified-item protection and bicycle cover. The options and limits available may depend on the insurer underwriting your policy.

Is upgrading Intelligent Insurance home insurance worth it?

Upgrading may be worthwhile if you want more protection against boiler breakdowns and household emergencies, particularly as the standard £250 call-out limit may not cover the full cost of a complicated repair.

Family Legal Protection Plus could also be useful if you want cover for a wider range of personal disputes. However, you'll need to pay a £100 excess, and claims must meet certain conditions - such as having reasonable prospects of success.

The standard cover may be enough if you only want basic emergency assistance and legal protection. You should try to pick optional extras based on the belongings and risks you actually need to insure, rather than adding every available upgrade.

Is Intelligent Insurance the best company to insure my home with?

Which home insurer is best for you will depend on your own needs and circumstances. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of Intelligent Insurance home insurance to help you make your decision:

  • Pros of Intelligent Insurance home insurance

    • Intelligent Insurance specialises in properties and circumstances that mainstream insurers may reject, including listed, unoccupied, non-standard and renovated homes

    • Its underwriters U K Insurance accepted 80-85%[2] of combined home claims, New India accepted 85-90%[2] and AmTrust accepted 95-100%[2]. All were above the 70.7%[2] industry average

    • Policies can include up to £25,000 of family legal protection and basic home emergency cover worth up to £250 per call-out

    • Cover can include up to £1 million for buildings, £100,000 for contents and £5,000 for trace and access

    • Intelligent Insurance also has a five-star Defaqto rating and scores 4.5 out of 5 on Trustpilot

  • Cons of Intelligent Insurance home insurance

    • A non-refundable £50 arrangement fee is included in the price. Changes after the cooling-off period cost £30, while cancelling costs £60

    • The standard £250 call-out limit may not cover an expensive repair. Boiler and heating-system cover requires the Home Emergency Plus upgrade

    • Accidental damage, belongings away from home, bicycles and specified valuables are optional rather than automatically included

    • Intelligent Insurance uses several insurers and claims handlers, so limits, excesses and claims arrangements depend on your schedule

Who underwrites Intelligent Insurance home insurance?

Intelligent Insurance is an insurance broker rather than an underwriter. It arranges policies through a panel of UK insurers, so the company underwriting your cover depends on your property and circumstances.

Check your quote or policy schedule to find the name of your insurer, as this company will normally handle and pay any claim.

Can I pay Intelligent Insurance home insurance in monthly instalments?

Yes, you can usually pay annually by debit or credit card or spread the cost through monthly Direct Debit payments.

Paying monthly involves a credit agreement and a credit charge may apply, so check the total cost shown with your quote.

Does Intelligent Insurance home insurance cover subsidence?

Yes, Intelligent Insurance can provide buildings cover for subsidence, heave and landslip. It also specialises in arranging insurance for homes that have previously suffered subsidence or been underpinned.

Cover depends on the insurer and information provided when you apply. Exclusions can include normal settlement, erosion, faulty workmanship and damage during structural alterations, while a separate excess may also apply.

Does Intelligent Insurance home insurance cover home emergencies and boiler breakdowns?

Basic home emergency insurance is included as standard, providing up to £250 per call-out for certain urgent problems such as plumbing or electrical emergencies.

Boiler and heating-system cover is available through the optional Home Emergency Plus upgrade. This provides up to £1,000 per call-out and £1,000 across the policy year, as well as alternative accommodation in some circumstances.

Does Intelligent Insurance home insurance cover belongings away from home?

Belongings taken outside your home can be covered by adding personal belongings insurance for an extra cost.

You can normally choose up to £10,000 of cover in £1,000 increments. Items worth more than £2,000 generally need to be specified, while cover can apply throughout Europe and for up to 60 days elsewhere worldwide.

What is the Intelligent Insurance home insurance excess?

There is no single Intelligent Insurance excess because policies are offered through several insurers. Your total excess can include:
