Samsung’s latest folding phones are here. Read on for the inside line on the stunning Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4.
In the market for Samsung’s sleek new Galaxy Z Flip4? Then we’ve got all the details on this cutting edge handset for you, as well as the best deals.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 key new features
To the untrained eye, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 looks pretty much identical to the older Galaxy Z Flip3. But inside there are a series of major improvements which make it far better than its predecessor. The battery is now a 3,700mAh, meaning it can last a whole day. Still not up there with the likes of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, but a big jump on the Flip3.
The second screen, visible on the exterior when the Flip4 is folded, now has messaging controls, so you can fire off quick replies while out and about. The main camera has larger pixels to allow in more light for improved performance, and you can also bag the Galaxy Z Flip4 with 512GB storage.
We also really like the new Touchpad mode when the Galaxy Z Flip4 is in Flex Mode (when the device is folded from less than 170º). This means the lower half of the screen works like a laptop trackpad and is especially handy when flicking through pictures or using the device one handed.
How good is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 camera?
On the face of it, the cameras on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 are the same as last year’s Flip3, with a dual 12MP setup featuring one main and one ultra wide lens. However, Samsung says the pixels are larger on its newer phone, with 65% greater brightness, ensuring it can take better pictures in all conditions.
The results are impressive and stand up well against the likes of the iPhone 13 and Galaxy S22, especially in daytime conditions. However, the camera isn’t as good at night, hardly a surprise when rival phones offer triple or quad lens options.
The 10MP selfie camera comes into its own when the Galaxy Z Flip4 is folded, allowing you to stand the device on a surface and take images or make video calls without having to hold the phone itself. Performance wise, it’s the same as the Flip3, serving up decent images and video for social channels.
How good is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 design?
The design of the Flip4 looks broadly similar to the Flip3. But its matte finish makes it less slippery in the hand, and we can’t get enough of its pocketable style. When folded up it becomes a much less intrusive piece of kit than a full smartphone.
We’re particularly fond of how the small, 1.9-inch exterior screen acts as a handy space for quick replies to messages and using Spotify without having to open the phone up properly.
Eagle-eyed users will notice that the cameras protrude slightly more on the Galaxy Z Flip4, but that’s no deal breaker. Meanwhile, the fold on the main screen feels less prominent, which can only be a good thing.
How good is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 display?
Considering how small it folds up, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 has a highly impressive 6.7-inch screen when fully open. It uses Dynamic AMOLED tech, with a resolution of 2460 x 1080 pixels. That might not be as good as regular top end Samsung phones, but the 120Hz refresh rate and impressive brightness make it a joy to look at. It’s particularly snappy when scrolling through social media and looks great when streaming video.
It features a slightly different aspect ratio from normal phone screens, 22:9. This is fine for the most part but does render some apps awkward to use, with buttons harder to reach when using the Flip4 one handed.
The small 1.9-inch exterior screen is a handy addition. Pictures look tiny on it, but for everyday use when it comes to checking the time, tinkering with music streaming or checking messages, it’s impressive.
How good is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 battery life?
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 comes with a 3,500mAh battery. That’s far smaller than most top end smartphones these days, but will last a whole day on one charge. Not bad considering it has two displays. It’s also a marked improvement on the woeful power pack found in the older Z Flip3.
What are the key differences between the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3?
While the design may look the same, there are a few key changes on the Galaxy Z Flip4.
What we like
- Larger battery means all day use
- New Touchpad feature makes most of foldable screen
- Bigger storage options
- Top end chipset from Qualcomm
What we don't like
- Cameras are good but broadly the same as Flip3
How does the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 compare to other flagship handsets in the UK market?
Aside from Samsung’s larger Galaxy Z Fold4, and the older Flip3 and Fold3 models, there are no other devices like Samsung’s foldable phones available right now.
If you want greater imaging prowess, better battery life and similar performance, then Samsung’s Galaxy S22 range is likely to be for you. Likewise, Apple’s excellent iPhone 13 has a better camera and will last longer.
But really, that’s not what Flip4 fans are after. This is a unique take on the smartphone, offering a pocketable solution and next generation tech. Just be aware that it is expensive and will likely date quickly.
MoneySuperMarket's expert rating: Four out of five
There is so much to love about the Galaxy Z Flip4. It has a good camera, improved battery life and a unique design all of its own. There’s massive storage if needed, as well as Android’s One UI to ensure the user experience is smooth and breezy. However, it’s very pricey and lacks some of the tech found in the very best standard smartphones.
