Why drive a Ford Ka?

The Ford Ka was launched in 1996 as a low-cost option in the Ford range. The three-door hatchback proved popular from the start, offering great fuel economy, revered handling and Ford’s renowned reliability.

Compact and nifty, it’s perfect for a new driver or used as a city run-around. The range has evolved in recent years and the newer five-door Ka+ models are more spacious and include the Studio and Zetec.

Insurers sort cars into categories, or ‘groups’, based on a range of factors, including their cost, performance and availability of parts. Check the table below to see how your Ford Ka compares..

What affects the cost of my Ford Ka insurance?

Insurers use a range of factors to determine the risk of you making an insurance claim. They include the following:

  • Birthday

    Your age

Younger drivers typically find car insurance more expensive because insurers view them as more at risk of having an accident

  • Map

    Your location

Where you live can have a bearing on insurance costs. Some areas of the UK see higher rates of car theft or vandalism, which bump up premiums

  • Briefcase

    Your occupation

Some professions, such as travelling salespeople who spend more time on the road, are seen as more likely to have an accident

  • Driving License

    Your driving and claims history

If you’ve had driving convictions or made car insurance claims in the past, insurers take the view that you’re more likely to claim again

  • Lock

    Storage and safety

If you can park your car in a garage, carport or driveway overnight rather than on the roadside, you should be able to benefit from lower premiums

While you must inform your insurer of any damage to your vehicle, if you avoid claiming for any minor damage it will help you build your no-claims bonus– potentially earning you discounted premiums in the future

  • Tick

Our expert says…

The original Ford Ka, which went on sale in 1996, was hugely popular in the UK, thanks to its distinctive shape and low running costs. The second generation Ka, which shared the same underpinnings as the Fiat 500, was a bit more conservative but with better equipment and fuel economy. Ford later replaced the three-door Ka with the five-door Ka+, which was based on the Fiesta. All could be considered a good choice as a cheap first car.
