Moped Insurance

Furthermore, their light frames, which must not exceed 250kg, make them ideal for manoeuvring through traffic and parking is never a problem.
They are also are also cheaper to insure than most other vehicles, but specialist moped insurance can be hard to find. Who needs moped insurance?
In short, anyone that has a moped on the road to needs to have it insured.
The UK has one of the worst records in Europe for having uninsured drivers on the road and it is a problem that marketing research group Consumer Intelligence believes is costing the UK insurance industry around £2billion every year. And to cover this insurers directly pass on the costs to every other motorist in the form of higher basic premiums.
To try and combat this problem the government has introduced a set of regulations known as Continuous Insurance Enforcement (CIE), which makes a legal requirement for registered vehicle keepers to ensure their vehicle is insured at all times.
This means that it is an offence to keep a vehicle, including a moped, without insurance unless you have informed the DVLA that the vehicle is being kept off the road and have a Statutory Off Road Notice (SORN).
Anyone that does not comply with these rules could face a fixed penalty notice of £100, a court prosecution with a maximum fine of £1,000 and could even have their vehicle clamped, impounded and crushed.
Do mopeds need to be insured independently?
Even though holders of full UK driving licences can legally ride a moped without L-plates or undergoing compulsory basic training (CBT) - although it is recommended that CBT is undertaken before riding on the road - this doesn’t mean that their moped will be covered by their car insurance.
That is why you need to take out moped insurance and, as with most vehicle policies, there are three types of cover; third-party, third-party, fire and theft and fully comprehensive.
Third-party moped insurance
This is the minimum cover required by UK law but insurers will only pay out on damage caused to another vehicle and not your own. This means that while you may be able to save money on the price of your premium you may find that you cannot afford to repair or replace your moped after a crash or theft.
Third-party, fire and theft moped insurance
This provides the same level of cover as basic third-party insurance but will also pay out if your moped is stolen or if it is damaged or destroyed by fire.
Fully comprehensive moped insurance
As the name suggests, this is the most comprehensive level of insurance you can take out and offers the same level of cover as third-party, fire and theft but will also pay out for your vehicle if it’s damaged or written off in an accident.
