Our expert says: "A good alternative to a cashback card because reward points can be used at a wide range of high street retailers including John Lewis, Boots and Debenhams. Earn 1 point for every £1.00 spent on the card. There is a 13-month 0% offer on balance transfers, but don’t use the card for this purpose if you’ll spend on it as well: purchases are only interest-free for 3 months – you’ll be charged 15.9% thereafter"

Credit Cards Guide

What is a cashback credit card?

Money for nothing is a rare thing in this world. But credit cards can be very rewarding, if you know how to use them. Some credit cards reward you with cashback for every pound you spend on the card.

Cashback credit cards are great for those who clear their balance in full each month.

Benefits

Cashback cards reward you for spending by giving you a percentage of all your spending back.

The cashback you earn accumulates over the course of the year and the total is either credited to your account annually or sent to you in the form of a cheque.

Negatives

Cashback credit cards are only worth considering if you pay your balance off in full each month. If not, the interest you'll be charged will far outweigh the value of the cashback benefit.

Alternatives

As well as cashback cards, a number of lenders offer reward cards that offer benefits such as Airmiles or reward points that can be used to get money off in certain high street stores when you spend on them. Check out our guide to reward cards for more details.
