Why should I consider working abroad travel insurance?

When you are working abroad it is important to ensure you have the right insurance in place in case the worst should happen. This is especially important when you need medical fees covered abroad. However, it is important to note that if you are working abroad, a regular travel insurance policy probably will not cover you as most policies are designed to cover travel for leisure. To ensure you have adequate cover for working abroad you need to ensure that your policy includes cover in the workplace.

Does standard travel insurance cover working abroad?

No, most standard travel insurance policies will not cover you working abroad. You will need specialised cover that includes cover for working abroad to ensure you are protected if anything should happen to you while you are there.

Working abroad without any insurance cover in place can mean that if the worst should happen and you need medical treatment or repatriation, you will need to pay for those costs yourself, which can rack up quite a hefty bill.

Does long-term travel insurance cover me?

Long-term travel insurance is for trips that last from 6 to 24 months. These policies sometimes do offer cover for working abroad however you need to check your policy to be sure of what type of work they cover (if any) and what you will actually be covered for. If your policy does not cover working abroad or the specific work you aim to do while you’re abroad, you may need to take out a specialist policy.

What’s typically included in working abroad travel insurance?

While all travel insurance policies are different and what you will be covered for varies, these are the common things you should look to be covered for:

  • Medical cover: This includes treatment for an accident or if you fall ill

  • Repatriation: The costs for getting you back to the UK will be covered by your insurer

  • Lost, stolen, or damaged luggage:  Up to £4,000 in case your baggage or personal belongings are lost, damaged, or stolen while you’re travelling, allowing you to claim for their full or partial value.

  • Personal liability: This provides cover if you are legally responsible for injuring someone or damaging their property. If your policy does not cover your employment abroad, you will not be covered for any workplace incidents that occur.

  • Cancellation and curtailment: You will be covered up to a certain amount in compensation if you need to cancel your holiday due to bereavement or illness (these need to be accepted reasons listed in your policy)

Am I covered for personal liability claims while working abroad?

While standard travel insurance policies are likely to include personal liability cover, it is unlikely that they will cover you for incidents that happen in the workplace. Liability while working is usually covered by your employer or you may need specialised travel insurance while working abroad that will supply adequate cover for you.

What are my options for insurance to make sure I am covered?

Looking for a specialist policy that will cover your activities including your job while you are abroad is your best option to ensure you are protected while you are away. While it is possible that some long-term travel policies or some backpack travel policies will offer some type of cover for some jobs, it is unlikely that they will provide comprehensive cover that will be substantial enough, should the worst happen.

Is manual labour covered?

You may find that certain backpacker policies or even long trip travel policies will include cover for work such as restaurants, bars or even some office jobs however, you will need to take out a specialist policy to get cover for manual labour while you are abroad.

Am I better off taking out international health insurance if im working abroad?

While international health insurance will cover your for when you get ill or if you need any medical assistance while you’re abroad, it will not provide cover such as gadget cover, or personal liability. If health costs are your priority to get cover for while you are abroad, it would be a great option for you as they usually include extensive healthcare services.
