Conventional Boilers

Conventional boilers, aka heat-only boilers, are a traditional type of boiler often found in older homes. They provide your home with heating and hot water by use of a cold water tank and hot water cylinder.

They take up a lot of space, thanks to those big tanks, and aren’t the most efficient boiler type. But they do mean you have an ample supply of water ready to go at all times, and are a good choice for large properties.

Condensing Boilers

Condensing boilers are by far the most common type of gas boiler in the UK – most boilers connected to the gas grid are condensing, in fact.

The hot gas passes through a central chamber, heating up the water. There is then a second chamber, which uses residual heat to keep water warm when it returns into the system.

Combi Boilers

Combi boilers, or combination boilers, are a popular type of condensing boiler. ‘Combination’ refers to the way this boiler is capable of both heating up your water and distributing it throughout your central heating system.

There are no tanks to store water in – a combi boiler just heats up your water as and when it’s needed, making it more efficient than a conventional boiler.

They’re small in size, easy to install, and energy efficient. They’re also very popular, so you have a lot of choice over the model of boiler you get as well as qualified engineers.

The downside is that combi boilers can be less effective if your water pressure is poor. They also have a lot of moving components which could potentially break down.

System Boilers

System boilers are often seen as a compromise between conventional and combi boilers. They have a hot water tank, but no cold water tank – your cold water is fed directly from the mains.

They take up a little less space than conventional boilers, and have fewer complex components than combi boilers.

However, they’re also less efficient, and again aren’t the best if your water pressure is already poor.

Why get a new boiler?

If you’ve had your boiler for a long time, especially if it’s 15 years old or more, it may be time to upgrade to a more efficient one.

The main reason is that new boilers are much more energy efficient. All new boilers must have an energy rating of A – the highest possible – meaning they are incredibly efficient. You’ll save money on your energy bill, and help reduce the carbon footprint of your home.

Plus, new boilers are safer and more reliable than older ones. A new model is less likely to break down or have problems.

Our expert says…

Upgrading to a new A-rated condensing boiler can significantly enhance energy efficiency and reduce heating costs. According to the Energy Saving Trust1, replacing an old G-rated boiler with an A-rated boiler will save you up to £300 a year on energy bills in England.

“If you’re upgrading your boiler, why not upgrade your heating controls too? Many households use smart heating controls such as Google Nest, Hive or Honeywell to heat their home more efficiently and only when needed. These smart systems can prevent wasted energy by ensuring the heating is off when no one is home and by reducing overheating.

Getting a new boiler installed

With MoneySuperMarket, you can compare the cost of a new boiler. Our boiler quotes include the price of the boiler, installation, and replacement of the old boiler, so you can see the total cost upfront.

If you’re getting a boiler replaced, the installation should go like this:

  • The installer will remove your old boiler

  • They’ll then flush or clean your system

  • They’ll fit your new boiler, along with any new pipework or equipment

  • They’ll test it and complete any necessary paperwork

  • Once all the work is finished, they should show you how to operate and check the boiler

Either you or the installer will need to register the boiler with the boiler manufacturer – that way, you can ensure the warranty is valid.

A simple replacement combi boiler usually only takes a day to fit. However, if it’s a more complex installation – for example, you’re switching boiler type, moving the boiler to a new room, or upgrading your radiators – it could take two or more days.

When should I replace my boiler?

In general, a functioning and well-maintained boiler can last between 10 to 15 years. If your boiler is around 15 years old, it’s recommended that you replace it with a newer one.

However, if your current boiler is experiencing problems, you may need to replace it earlier than expected. Signs of a faulty boiler include:

  • Frequent breakdowns

  • Working less efficiently than before

  • Increased energy bills despite no change in usage

  • Strange noises coming from your boiler and radiators

  • Leaking water

  • Strange smells

Not all issues require a complete boiler replacement – some problems can be repaired with an engineer visit. But if it’s a serious problem (for example, smells can indicate a carbon monoxide leak), or you’re due an upgrade to a newer, more energy-efficient boiler, you should look into getting a replacement.

What to look for in a new boiler

  • Boiler type – Take a look at the types of boiler above. Think about what’s best for the space in your home, what your water pressure is like, and how you tend to use your water

  • Size – Consider both the physical size of the boiler in the space it will occupy, and the kW (kilowatt) power. The more heat you need, and the bigger your home, the higher kW you’ll need

  • Cost – The cost of a new boiler can range from £500 up to £3,500, plus installation fees. Think about your budget and how much you’re willing to spend

  • Reliability and reviews – More reliable boilers are less likely to break down and cause issues. Check out some reviews from users and independent testers online

Can I pay for my boiler over monthly installments?

Yes. Some boiler suppliers, such as BoilerCentral, will let you spread out the cost of your boiler – over several years, if you wish.

However, bear in mind that paying monthly can sometimes add up to be a bit more expensive, as you may have to pay interest.

What happens when a new boiler is fitted?

When you get an old boiler replaced, the installer will first cut it off from the gas and water supply, then remove it. Next, they’ll flush or clean your system, before installing your new one along with any external piping or equipment.

Will my old boiler and/or tanks be removed from my property?

This depends on who installs your boiler – but generally, yes. Most companies will happily take the old equipment away. Just be aware that some will charge extra to do so.

Can I buy a new boiler online?

Yes, you can. You can purchase your new boiler and arrange the installation too. Just pick a new boiler from one of our select partners using our comparison tool. You can also buy other energy systems such as solar panels and heat pumps.

How much would a new boiler cost?

The cost can vary depending on the type and size of your boiler. The price for the boiler alone can range from £500 to £2,500.

Fitting costs will also apply, and you may be charged for new parts on the rest of your system if they need replacing too. Overall, a new boiler with a complex installation can come to as much as £5,000 at the top end.

How long does it take to install a replacement boiler?

This depends on a few factors, but it can take anywhere between one and three days.

If you’re replacing a boiler like for like (e.g. replacing a combi boiler with another combi boiler), installation is quick and won’t take more than a few hours.

But if the installation is more complex – especially if other parts of your heating system need replacing too – expect it to take a few days of work.

Which boiler type should I choose?

When choosing a boiler, think about how you use your water, how big your home is, and how large a boiler you think you need.

Combi boilers are the most popular type in the UK, as they’re energy efficient and take up very little space. They also have the advantage of both providing your hot water and powering your central heating system – but they aren’t ideal in homes where the water pressure is poor.

Conventional boilers or heat-only boilers take up more space and are less energy efficient, but often a better choice for supplying hot water across a large property.

System boilers don’t take up too much space while still giving you a tank of hot water ready to go. They’re less efficient than combi boilers, but more convenient than conventional ones.

You can also explore other options such as heat pumps.

Do boilers come with a warranty?

Yes, all boilers come with a warranty – this varies depending on the manufacturer and model.
All boilers should have a standard warranty, which usually lasts between one to five years.

That said, many manufacturers now offer free extended warranties, which can range from two to ten years.

Will my old boiler be taken away?

Yes, the installer will also take away your old boiler once they’ve replaced it with a new one. This can sometimes come at an additional expense – luckily, our quotes show the total cost, so you know exactly what you’re paying for.

How often should I replace my boiler?

A boiler that’s properly maintained and functioning well should last between 10 to 15 years.

To ensure your boiler lasts as long as possible, you should get it serviced every year by a registered Gas Safe engineer.
