How would you like to get something back every time you spend on your credit card? It sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? But a reward credit card literally rewards you for spending.
Earn points when you spend
There are various different types of reward credit card but you commonly earn points every time you spend on the card. So, you might earn one reward point for every pound £1 you spend. When you have earned 100 points, you could be entitled to a reward worth £1. In other words, you spend £100 and get back £1.
The points can normally be exchanged for shopping vouchers or discounts in retail or entertainment outlets. Some cards even allow you to collect points to put towards the cost of flights.
How to cash in your reward
Some cards offer different rewards depending on where you spend in order to promote shopper loyalty. For example, you might earn one point for every £1 you spend in a particular store, but one point for every £2 spent at other retailers. There are usually restrictions on how you cash in your reward, too. Some cards, for example, only allow you to redeem points against purchases in one particular store, or in a limited number of outlets.
Clear your debts in full
The interest rates on reward and points credit cards are not normally particularly competitive. These cards are therefore only really suited to people who can afford to clear their balance in full every month. If you allow debts to build up, you will almost certainly pay more in interest than you will get back in rewards.
You should also look carefully at the terms and conditions of reward cards. After all, if you are not a frequent flyer, why bother collecting points towards flights? And if you aren’t a regular shopper, a reward card might not be the best choice.
There is also little to be gained by transferring a balance to a reward card as you normally only earn rewards when you spend on the card.
Multiple reward cards
Some people prefer the flexibility of cashback cards, which give you cash back every time you spend. Of course, there is no reason why you shouldn’t take out multiple cards to make full use of all the different types of reward – as long as you can keep track so that your debts are always under control.
