Is Sky Mobile a good network?

A household name when it comes to TV, Sky Mobile is also a strong contender when it comes to SIM-only deals.

It’s very reasonably priced, in line with budget networks like giffgaff, iD Mobile and Tesco Mobile. But it also offers some unique features and perks that you’d typically only find with big-name networks like O2, such as its generous data rollover scheme.

Why choose a Sky Mobile SIM?

  • Flexible contracts – Sky Mobile’s ‘Mix’ feature allows you to change your data plan mid-contract - and lowering your data allowance also reduces your monthly bill.
  • Generous data rollover – at the end of every month, any unused data is automatically rolled over into your Sky Piggybank. You can use this spare data whenever you want, for up to three years, use it to offset the cost of a new phone, spend it on a range of rewards, or even share it up to 7 SIMs on your account.
  • Good coverage – Sky Mobile uses O2’s excellent 4G and 5G network, which covers around 99% of the UK population.
  • Exclusive perks if you’re an existing Sky TV customer – as well as enjoying great offers on mobile deals, Sky TV customers get unlimited streaming from all Sky apps without using up any data.

Overall, Sky Mobile combines affordability with some special value-adding extras, making it an easy network to recommend to most people. If you want to learn more, read our full Sky Mobile review.

Which networks offer good SIM plan alternatives?

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my Sky Mobile SIM abroad?

Yes – but at an extra cost. Depending on where you’re heading, you can buy a Roaming Passport Plus pass, which gives you access to your UK data, calls and text allowances for a daily charge. This is available in over 55 select destinations, including the EU.

If you’re travelling further afield, you may need to pay ‘Rest of the world’ roaming charges.

It’s always best to check roaming rules before you go on holiday.

Can I get 5G enabled Sky Mobile SIMs?

Sky Mobile sim plans at 5G-ready at no extra cost - so if your phone is 5G-enabled, you can access Sky Mobile's 5G network coverage.

Can I keep my mobile number if I switch to a Sky Mobile SIM-only deal?

Yes, you can keep your existing phone number. It’s easy to move it to Sky Mobile – you’ll just need to ask for a PAC (porting authorisation code) from your current mobile network.

Once you’ve activated your new Sky SIM, you can transfer your number by logging in to your account with your Sky ID.

Do I need an unlocked phone to use a Sky Mobile SIM?

Yes – like with most networks, your phone needs to be unlocked in order to use a Sky Mobile SIM.

This is because it may be locked to the network you bought your phone from, so you can’t use a SIM from another network.

Luckily, it’s easy to unlock your phone. Just get in touch with your old mobile network to ask them to unlock it. Once it’s unlocked, your new Sky Mobile SIM card should work fine.

Are Sky Mobile SIM only deals cheaper than a phone contract?

In general, yes – SIM-only plans are almost always cheaper than a mobile plan with a phone included.

Unlike a phone contract, SIM-only deals don’t make you pay off the cost of a handset over the course of your contract. You’ll only need to pay for your data, calls and text allowances, meaning your monthly bill and overall cost works out considerably less.

Additionally, phone contracts are typically longer than SIM-only deals. A contract for the latest phone can be as long as 24 months. In contrast, all of Sky’s SIM-only plans start at 12 months, leading to a much lower overall cost.
