Well, it’s big. The iPhone 12 Pro Max is 160.8mm tall, while otherwise looking exactly the same as the rest of the iPhone 12 models.
It has an old school iPhone look, with curved square edges, and a shiny stainless steel and glass exterior for a truly luxurious look and feel. Take your pick from silver, graphite, gold, or pacific blue.

The cameras on the Pro Max are the best of the iPhone 12 set by a good mile. Given it's an older phone now, shots won't be quite as good quality as a more recent model - but it's still considered excellent as phone cameras go.
There are three lenses: 12MP wide lens, 12MP telephoto lens with 2.5x optical zoom, 12MP ultrawide lens with 120-degree field view, and a 12MP front-facing lens.

For a start, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is quite a bit bigger than other phones on the market. If you want a larger-sized phone – and prefer iPhone over Android – then the Pro Max series is the one to go for.
Released in 2020, the 12 Pro Max isn’t from the latest iPhone cohort. It’ll be slightly behind later iPhone models in terms of specifications – in particular the next-gen iPhone 13 Pro Max.
What are the key differences between the iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 13 Pro Max?
The iPhone 13 Pro Max was released just a year after the 12 Pro Max, in 2021. The differences aren’t life-changing, but the 13 Pro Max is certainly a clear step better.
First off, the designs are very similar, and the sizes of the two phones are practically identical.
Inside, the tech is a step up on the 13 model. It packs an Apple A15 Bionic chip (the 12 Pro Max has an A14) and the battery is heftier.
The cameras are excellent on both phones, though slightly better on the 13 model. The telephoto lens is capable of 3x optical zoom (compared to 2.5x on the 12), and the accompanying software comes with new features too.
Is the iPhone 12 Pro Max worth buying in 2025?
It isn’t the latest model available in the Pro Max series of iPhones – but the 12 Pro Max is far from obsolete.
If you’re happy with 2020 technology, you can save money by going for the older 12 Pro Max, which is now much cheaper than it was at launch. However, bear in mind that Apple usually only supports phones for seven years after their release date.
