When is the best time to sell my iPhone XR?

New iPhones are usually released every September – so, offers on old iPhones will dip whenever a newer model goes on sale. In which case, it’s a good idea to sell your iPhone XR before then.

All that said, there’s never really a bad time to declutter your old devices. If you have an old iPhone XR you no longer use, now is a good time to sell it.

iPhone XR price history

The iPhone XR was released in October 2018. At launch, it was priced at £749 for 64GB of storage, £799 for 128GB, and £899 for the 256GB version.

At the time, it was considered to be Apple’s budget flagship handset. It was launched alongside two other devices: the higher-end iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.

Following the launch of the iPhone 13, Apple discontinued the iPhone XR. But you can still sell it to recyclers, who may resell it as a refurbished device.

Will my iPhone XR be recycled?

Yes – but what happens depends on the condition of your device, as well as the current smartphone market.

Phones that are in good condition and/or have been recently released will typically be refurbished and sold on. Older devices and phones in less good condition may be dismantled, and their parts used to refurbish other phones.

Otherwise, if it can’t be refurbished or reused, it’ll be taken apart. Recyclable materials will be melted down and reused elsewhere, while other parts will be disposed of safely.

Whatever happens, it’ll be dealt with in a way that's better for the environment.

Can I get paid for a broken iPhone XR?

Of course – most recyclers will happily accept phones that are broken or damaged. This could be anything like cosmetic damage (including cracked screens, scratches and dents, broken buttons), faulty pixels on the display, or operating system problems. To get the most accurate quotes for your iPhone XR, it’s best to be as honest as you can about its condition.

You’ll get less money for it than a fully-functioning phone in good condition – but you should still be able to get some money for it. However, recyclers are unlikely to accept water-damaged phones, or phones that are significantly damaged (for example, if it’s snapped in two).

Each recycling company will have its own conditions on what counts as broken and what they’ll accept, so be sure to check.

Can I trade my old iPhone XR for a new one?

Indeed, you can trade in your old iPhone XR for a new phone – and there are a couple of ways to do this.

First, you can trade in your old iPhone directly to Apple. This gets you a discount towards a new iPhone, and it’s pretty handy if you are planning to buy your device outright from Apple.

However, Apple’s trade-in programme may not necessarily offer the best price on your old phone. Not to mention, you may be able to find betters deals for new handsets elsewhere.

To weigh up your trade-in options, see our comparison table above. We’ll show you the quotes currently offered by other companies we work with, so you can compare all your options and choose the best one for you.
