Top money-saving tips

Looking for ways to save? Here are some of our top cost-cutting tips to save you money.

Don't forget, you can also compare quotes with us online the see if you can get a better deal elsewhere.

When you pay monthly for your insurance - whether that's car or home insurance - insurers will usually charge you interest as much as a third of the price of your premium for some policies. Choosing monthly premiums with a car insurance policy will also involve a hard credit check, which can impact your credit report.

If you can afford to pay for your insurance annually, you can save money, prevent missed monthly payments affecting your credit score, and save yourself the worry of having to manage insurance payments along with the rest of your monthly bills.

Your occupation can impact your premiums more than you think, but there is a way you might be able to shave few pounds off your car insurance premium - by tweaking your job title.

There are different ways to describe the same job, and choosing the right description could reduce your premiums. For example, a writer might also be able to describe themselves as an author, or a journalist, or copywriter, or a content producer, and each of these different job titles will come with different car insurance prices.

To help you pick the right job title to save on your car insurance, try out our car insurance job picker tool. Tell us your occupation, and we'll show you the average car insurance premiums for a number of similar job titles that might apply to you as well.

A word of warning, however - you should never lie to your insurance provider. Make sure that you job title you give to your insurer accurately describes your current occupation, otherwise you may end up invalidating your policy.

An inefficient boiler could end up costing you more money than it should. To make the most of the energy you're paying for, keep your boiler in good shape. Upgrade old boilers, flush the system once in a while to get rid of built up sludge and debris, and get your boiler serviced regularly.

To keep your boiler in top shape, it can help to have boiler cover. Boiler cover can give you peace of mind that you've got access to fast and professional repairs if your boiler breaks down, and most policies will also include an annual service.

A build-up of dirt, limescale and debris can reduce the efficiency of your household appliances, like your refrigerator, oven, kettle, and even dishwasher.

Regular cleaning can also improve the lifespan of plenty of appliances and reduce breakdowns. Just make sure that any electricals are unplugged before you start cleaning them.

If you're paying off debt and finding your interest difficult to keep up with, you can save money on interest by using a balance transfer credit card. With this kind of credit card, you shift debt from one credit card to another, and for a short while you won’t have to pay interest on your repayments.

However, be aware that after the 0% promotional period ends, interest rates will go up, so if you haven’t paid off you debt by then you may end up paying a higher interest rate.

There is a choice to be made between convenience and cost. Auto renewing or choosing a rolling monthly plan for products like insurance, energy, or broadband is much easier to manage if you don't have the energy to worry about your contracts expiring. However, these decisions almost always come with higher prices.

If you have the time, shopping around and switching is the way to go to save money on your bills. Set aside some time to compare quotes and offers from other providers regularly and you'll be surprised by how much you could save.
