Energy, Personal Finance & Insurance
Mel Hunter
Mel Hunter has worked as a journalist on national newspapers and magazines for more than 20 years. Writing for a wide range of publications, including Good Housekeeping, Woman & Home, The Telegraph and Saga, she has a monthly ‘Saver’ column in Prima magazine, helping readers’ money go further, and regularly writes the Savers page and other money features for The Sun.
For many years, as the newspaper’s ‘Reader’s Champion’, she helped hundreds of people fight for their consumer rights. “I get a real buzz from helping people squeeze more out of life for less,” she explains. Whether writing about energy bills or insurance. Mel aims to produce articles that are both engaging and relevant to real-life situations.
She is also interested in the link between mental health and money, and in raising awareness of the financial gap between men and women. A keen reader and runner, Mel lives with her husband and two children in south-west London, balancing her own books with a busy family life.
Mel's Experience
Mel has been writing about consumer rights and money for the past decade. There are few subjects that she hasn't written about, whether reporting on how the financial cost of cancer or how being neurodivergent can affect your finances. She's spoken to experts about how to teach children about money and analysed spreadsheets to find out the true cost of unclaimed benefits. She has written a series of features on school bursaries and how they can help families who would ordinarily struggle to afford the fees. She is driven by helping people get the very best deals and finding ways for them to cut their costs without cutting corners.
She writes the Sun Savers column every Saturday and Sunday helping readers do just that. Her monthly money-saving spread in Prima magazine is a joyful mix of ways to spend more wisely and enjoy life for less. Mel has been a freelance journalist for the past 14 years and prior to that she was news editor at Cosmopolitan and a feature writer at both The Sun and The Mirror.
