Many factors can affect the cost of car insurance; from the age and occupation of the driver to their location, where the car is kept, and of course the make and model. The length of time that a driver has held an insurance policy, and hasn’t made a claim, can also affect the overall cost.

For drivers who have gone for at least 12 months without making a claim, insurers will apply a no-claims bonus or discount to the premium. The longer you go without making a claim, the greater the discount you’ll receive, with some insurers doing this all the way up to 15 years. The bonus can also be transferable between providers if you choose to change insurer.

With more than 42 million Brits holding driving licences (as of April 2024 according to the DVLA), we thought it might be interesting to dig into our no claims data. We wanted to find out the names of drivers who are racking up lengthy no claims streaks and which cars the drivers with the longest no claims discounts choose to drive.

Melvyn Is The Men’s Name With The Longest No Claims Streak

According to our research, the name Melvyn carries the highest number of years of No Claims Bonus (NCB) for men in the UK, at an average of 14 years and 2 months. Melvyn was a particularly popular name from the 1930s to 1960s, so many people who share this moniker will likely have extensive driving experience that means they’re less likely to make an insurance claim.

Following closely behind, the name Norman ranks in second place, with an average of 14 years and 1 month of NCB held by those with this name. Geoff places in third, with an average of 13 years and 11 months NCB held, slipping just below the 14-year threshold to round off the topflight. However, the name Geoff is in many instances short for ‘Geoffrey’ - a name which places in 15th place on the table, with alternate spelling ‘Jeffrey’ in 16th, with an average of 13 years and 3 months of NCB held for each.

The name Neville, familiar to many thanks to Harry Potter, is another moniker that’s associated with a high number of no claims years for car insurers. At 13 years and 8 months, the name places in fourth thanks to the careful driving of those with this name. Leslie completes the top five names for men with the highest years of no-claims bonus, at 13 years and 7 months.

Norma Is The Ladies’ Name With The Longest No Claims Streak

For women, Norma is the name that carries the highest number of years with no claims on average, at 14 years and 2 months. Said to be derived from the Latin for ‘rule’ or ‘standard’, it seems that those called Norma are indeed adept at following the rules of the road.

In second place is Pat, a classic name that’s often short for ‘Patricia’. This name saw its popularity peak between the 1940s and 50s in the UK and has a long association with British culture thanks to fictional characters such as Eastenders’ Pat Butcher. Those with this name have an average NCB spanning 13 years and 11 months, just slightly ahead of Pam which place in third with 13 years and 10 months.

Beryl and Jean complete the top five female names with the longest average years of no claims, both at 13 years and 7 months.

SUVs Dominate The No Claims Leaderboard

We also took a closer look at car makes and models to reveal which models are driven by those with the highest number of no claims’ years. Though the make and model of vehicle can influence the cost of car insurance, out data reveals which cars are favoured by the most experienced and claim-free drivers.

The Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Ultimate T-GDI ranks as the car driven by those with the highest number of no-claims bonus years on average, at 14 years and 4 months. The Ford Puma ST-Line Vignale 155 MHEV follows in second at 14 years and 1 month, while the Honda HR-V Advance Style I-MMD EHEV places in third at precisely 14 years.

All the cars in the top 10 list are SUV or Crossover models, which are models often favoured by more experienced drivers in general due to their larger size, comfort and practicality. As a result, many of these drivers will have been on the road for longer than their younger counterparts, who often favour smaller vehicles such as hatchbacks, allowing them to build up their no-claims streaks because of their driving tenure, and greater experience on the roads.

How You Can Build Your No Claims Bonus

Alicia Hempsted

Insurance Expert

Our car insurance expert, Alicia Hempsted says:

“Insurers look at the length of time since you last made a claim on your car insurance when they calculate the cost of your premium. The longer your No Claims Bonus, the less risky you are to insure, and that means a lower price for your premium. Whilst our research shows that Melvyns and Normas tend to have the longest no claims records, anyone can start seeing cost-saving benefits after just one year of no claims, and any driver can start building up their no claims bonus as soon as they’re the main driver on a policy.”

Top Tips to Keep Your No-Claims Bonus Intact:

✅ Drive carefully and follow road safety rules.
✅ Park in secure locations to minimize the risk of theft.
✅ If you have a minor accident, consider paying for small repairs yourself rather than claiming.
✅ Compare insurers to maximise your discount when switching policies.

For more details on how no-claims discounts work, check out our guide: MoneySuperMarket No Claims Discount Guide

Methodology

Using MoneySuperMarket data, we reviewed the number of years of No Claims Bonus listed on car insurance applications between July 2024 and January 2025. We then grouped quotes based on the first name of the applicant, before ranking them by the average number of years of No Claims Bonus.  The same process was used for car make and model. Each driver name and model of car had at least 100 sales against it.

Data correct as of March 2025.
