A supplier, broker or landlord has just asked for your MPAN or MPRN. You need the number now. Do you know what to look for? Or where to start looking?

Your MPAN number is your electricity supply number. Your MPRN number is your gas supply number. In this guide, we'll explain what to look for and go into more detail about what they mean and why you need them.

But first, let's tell you where to find them. Your landlord hasn't got all day.

Where to find your MPAN and MPRN

  • MPAN (electricity): Check your electricity bill. It usually sits in a grid marked “S” near your meter details or supply address.
  • MPRN (gas): Check your gas bill. Look for “MPRN”, “Meter Point Reference” or “M number”.

In this guide to MPAN and MPRN numbers…

  • You will learn exactly where to find your MPAN and MPRN on a business energy bill.
  • You will see how to tell supply numbers apart from account numbers and meter serial numbers.
  • You will find out what each set of MPAN digits means and how it affects your charges.
  • You will get free, official routes to find your numbers if you have no bill.
  • You will learn what happens to your numbers when you switch supplier, move premises or run several sites.

What is an MPAN number?

An MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number) is a unique 21-digit reference for an electricity supply point. It may also be called your supply number, S number or business supply number. The last 13 digits, called the MPAN core, identify your supply.

The full MPAN has two lines, as below:

  • The top line (8 digits) describes how your supply is metered and charged.
  • The bottom line (13 digits) is the MPAN core. It identifies your exact supply point.

Your MPAN belongs to the property’s electricity supply. It does not belong to your business or your supplier. If you leave the premises, the number stays behind.

Many business bills show only the 13-digit core. That is normal. The core is usually enough for a supplier or broker to give you a quote.

How MPAN is changing

The way meters are settled is changing. And so is MPAN. Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS) is currently rolling out across the UK.

It's an Ofgem-led programme that changes how electricity is billed in the UK. Instead of relying on estimated usage or daily smart meter data, suppliers will use half-hourly meter readings to charge customers for the electricity they actually use.

This means MPAN is also changing. The image below shows how new MPAN will look.

You can find out more in our guide to Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS).

What is an MPRN number?

An MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) is a unique number that identifies a gas supply point. It has between 6 and 10 digits, usually 10, and contains numbers only.

You may also see it called your M number or gas supply number. You can find it on your bill and it should look something like the image below.

Keep these points in mind:

  • If your premises has no gas supply, it has no MPRN.
  • Your MPRN is not your gas meter serial number. The serial number identifies the physical meter, not the supply point.
  • Like the MPAN, your MPRN stays with the property.

Where to find your MPAN and MPRN on your bill

If you are wondering where to find your MPAN and MPRN, start with your latest bill. Follow these steps:

  1. Find the supply or meter details section. It often sits on the first or second page, near your supply address.
  2. Look for the MPAN. Look for a grid of numbers with a large “S” on the left, or a label such as “Supply number” or “MPAN”
  3. Look for the MPRN. On a gas or dual fuel bill, find “MPRN”, “Meter Point Reference” or “M number”.
  4. Check the length. An MPRN has up to 10 digits. An MPAN has 13 or 21 digits.

Suppliers sometimes use different labels for MPAN and MPRN. When looking for your MPAN, also look out for 'supply number' or 'S number'. When looking for MPRN, check for 'meter point reference' or 'M number'.

Is your meter serial number the same as your MPAN or MPRN?

No, your meter serial number is the identification number for that meter, not the supply point. These change when the meters change, but the supply point numbers stay the same. These identify you or your meter, not your supply point. Using them could delay your quote.

Here's how to know you've found your meter serial number instead of your MPAN or MPRN.

  • Standard meters: Your meter serial number (MSN) usually sits just above or below the barcode. It is a long number, usually between 9 and 12 digits. On gas meters, it often starts with “L” and ends with “M”.
  • Smart meters: On a business smart meter, you can usually find the MSN on the front of the meter, next to the barcode. On electricity smart meters, it starts with 14P or 15P. On gas smart meters, it starts with G4P.

Make sure you don't get these numbers mixed up with your account number or your customer reference number.

Where to find MPAN and MPRNon your meter

Your meter is a less reliable place to look than your bill.

  • Electricity meters: Some older meters show the MPAN on a sticker or on the casing. Many meters do not show it at all.
  • Gas meters: These rarely show the MPRN. The number you see on the meter is usually the meter serial number.
  • Smart meters: Your in-home display does not show your MPAN. Use your bill or online account instead.

Stay safe when you check. Do not open locked meter cupboards or those marked as hazardous. Ask your landlord or building manager for help.

What do the MPAN digits mean?

Your MPAN reads left to right, top line first, then the core. Each part tells the industry something about your supply.

What does the top line of an MPAN mean?

PartDigitsWhat it tells you
Profile class2The usage pattern used for settlement. 01–02 are domestic. 03–04 are small business. 05–08 are non-domestic maximum demand bands. 00 means half-hourly.
Meter time switch code3How your meter records use, such as single rate or day/night.
Line loss factor class3The energy lost on the network. This affects your distribution charges.

What does the MPAN core mean?

PartDigitsWhat it tells you
Distributor ID2Your regional network operator (DNO). Numbers 10–23 cover the 14 DNO regions. Other numbers mean an independent network.
Unique identifier10Your individual supply point.
Check digit1A validation digit that confirms the MPAN is genuine.

In short, the top line explains how you are charged. The core tells the industry which supply is yours.

Profile class 00 and half-hourly meters

A profile class of 00 means your supply is settled on half-hourly data. Historically, this applied to larger sites using over 100kW on half-hourly meters.

That is now changing. The industry is moving all electricity supplies to market-wide half-hourly settlement (MHHS). Suppliers began migrating meters in October 2025. Elexon reported around 2.7 million migrations by 15 February 2026. All industry participants must qualify by 28 October 2026. Migration should finish in 2027.

As sites migrate, profile classes stop being used for settlement. Your top line may change as a result. Your 13-digit core does not change.

How to find your MPAN or MPRN without a bill

If you can't find a bill, you can still find your MPAN and MPRN. It'll just take a little more time.

  • Enter your postcode with MoneySuperMarket. This is usually the fastest route, as we should be able to pull your numbers from industry data.
  • Gas: Use Find My Supplier, run by Xoserve. It shows your MPRN and current gas supplier from your address. You can also call the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524.
  • Electricity: Use the Energy Networks Association postcode tool to find your DNO. Then contact that DNO’s MPAN enquiry service.
  • Ask your current supplier. They hold both numbers on your account.

Do not call 105 for your MPAN. That line is for power cuts only.

Do MPAN and MPRN numbers change when you switch or move?

When you switch business electricity suppliers, your MPAN stays with the supply point. The same applies to your MPRN when you switch business gas. Your new supplier uses the same numbers as before.

When you move premises, you take on the numbers of your new premises. Your old numbers stay with your old site. Read our guide to moving into new business premises for the full steps.

If your meter or metering changes, your top line could change after a meter exchange or a move to half-hourly settlement. Your MPAN core only changes if your site gets a brand-new connection.

MPAN and MPRN numbers for multi-site businesses

Every supply point has its own number. One site may even have several MPANs. For example, you could have separate import and export meters, or more than one meter.

To stay on top of everything, it helps to keep a simple site register. For each site, record:

  • The address
  • The MPAN core
  • The MPRN
  • The current supplier
  • The contract end date

This saves time at every renewal. MoneySuperMarket can usually match supply numbers across your sites from their postcodes. Find out more about managing energy across multiple sites.

This guide covers Great Britain. Northern Ireland uses different supply number arrangements.

Business MPAN and MPRN FAQs

Still unsure about MPAN and MPRN? Check out the answers to our most frequently asked questions.

How many digits is an MPAN number?

A full MPAN has 21 digits. The top line has 8 digits and the bottom line, or core, has 13. Most suppliers only need the 13-digit core to identify your supply.

Why does my electricity bill only show 13 digits?

Many suppliers print only the MPAN core on bills. The core is the part that identifies your supply point. It is usually all you need for a quote or a switch.

Is my MPAN the same as my meter serial number?

No. Your MPAN identifies your supply point, while the serial number identifies the physical meter. If you replace your meter, the serial number changes but your MPAN core stays the same.

Where is the MPAN on my business electricity bill?

Look in the supply or meter details section, often near your supply address. The MPAN usually appears in a grid with a large “S” beside it. Some suppliers label it “Supply number” instead.

Does my MPAN change if I switch business energy suppliers?

No. Your MPAN and MPRN stay with the property’s supply point. Your new supplier uses the same numbers, so you do not need new ones.

How do I find my MPRN without a gas bill?

Use Find My Supplier, the free service run by Xoserve. Enter your address, and it shows your MPRN and current gas supplier. You can also call the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524.

Can I find my MPAN online for free?

Yes, in most cases. Use the Energy Networks Association postcode tool to find your network operator. Then contact that operator’s MPAN enquiry service, or enter your postcode with MoneySuperMarket.

Do I need my MPAN and MPRN to get a business energy quote?

Suppliers use these numbers to find your exact supply and price it accurately. You do not need to find them yourself, though. When you get a quote with MoneySuperMarket, we usually find them from your postcode.
