Why it pays to compare business energy suppliers

Different suppliers offer different rates, services, contract terms, and renewable options, so it's worth considering everything that’s on offer, including customer service, payment terms, and contract types

Comparing providers and switching to a fixed-rate contract gives you better control over your bills and ensures you avoid expensive out-of-contract rates. Here are some of the things to consider when running a business energy comparison:

  • Customer Service: Look at ratings and reviews.
  • Prices & Tariffs: Fixed vs variable, standing charges, unit rates.
  • Contract & Payment Terms: Flexibility, length, switching fees.
  • Green Energy Options: Access to renewable tariffs.
  • Supplier Reliability: Billing transparency, dispute resolution.

If you're unsure which suppliers offer non-domestic energy deals, here are some of the most popular commercial energy suppliers:

  • British Gas Business: Centrica offers tailored energy solutions through BG Lite for small businesses, BG Plus for large, high-consumption firms using half-hourly metering, and BG Core for those who prefer traditional account management. Packages feature fixed-price gas and electricity, low rates, smart meter options, online or paper billing, and dedicated customer support.
  • Brook Green Supply: Brook Green Supply provides bespoke energy solutions to larger businesses and corporates, offering fixed and flexible electricity and gas contracts, sustainability reporting, and personalised customer service, with a focus on clear pricing and transparent communication.
  • Crown Energy: As the utility arm of Crown Oil Group, Crown Energy brings over 25 years of experience supplying gas, electricity, and water to businesses, with a focus on single-supplier convenience and green gas options (available in 100%, 50%, or 25% biomethane) for larger organisations.
  • EDF Energy: One of the UK’s largest business energy providers, EDF supports companies of all sizes and those with complex needs like multi-site metering, offering scalable solutions across the UK.
  • E.ON Next: E.ON Next, part of the E.ON Group, supplies fixed-price or variable gas and electricity tariffs to UK businesses, with options for 1, 2, or 3-year deals, smart meter installation, 100% renewable electricity as standard, digital account management for easy control, and tailored support for SMEs, micros, larger companies, and multi-site operations.
  • ScottishPower: ScottishPower serves businesses of every size, focusing on online account management, app-based access, and automated meter readings to streamline billing and reduce costs.
  • SEFE Energy: SEFE Energy offers tailored gas, electricity, and renewable contracts for businesses of all sizes, featuring fixed or flexible pricing, dedicated UK-based customer support, account management, and sustainability solutions to help companies manage costs and carbon footprint with reliable service.
  • SSE: A leading UK supplier, SSE provides straightforward energy deals for SMEs and sole traders, as well as comprehensive energy management for corporations, the public sector, and consortia.
  • SmartestEnergy: SmartestEnergy supplies 100% renewable electricity and gas to SMEs and large businesses, providing flexible and fixed tariffs, smart meter installation, sustainability consulting, and UK-based customer service, with a strong focus on helping customers meet their net zero targets.
  • Yorkshire Gas and Power: Yorkshire Gas and Power supplies electricity and gas to UK businesses, specialising in competitive rates for SMEs and large organisations, with a focus on simple contracts, smart meter installation, and efficient online account management.
  • Valda Energy: Targeting SMEs, Valda Energy focuses on affordable energy and sustainability, sourcing power from independent producers using solar, wind, hydro, and anaerobic digestion processes, with a commitment to renewable energy.
  • YÜ Energy: A newer market entrant, YÜ Energy specialises in small business utilities, delivering competitively priced energy deals and responsive customer service tailored to SMEs.

Comparing these business energy suppliers will help you understand which providers best match your needs and your business’s energy usage.

How to compare and switch business gas and electricity suppliers

Switching your business energy providers doesn’t have to be difficult or time-consuming. Using the Bionic business energy experts means you can compare rates from a panel of suppliers in one call, rather than wasting time calling each one for a quote.

This saves you time and could save your business a significant amount on its monthly bills.

Here are the steps to compare business electricity suppliers and make the switch:

  • Get your quotes: Instead of approaching multiple business electricity suppliers or gas providers for quotes, let the team at Bionic do it for you in just one call.
  • Choose the right tariff: Select the tariff that best suits your business’s energy needs and budget. If you're unsure which is best for your business, a Bionic energy expert will talk you through the options.
  • Let us start the switch: Once you’ve chosen your tariff, we’ll start the switch and inform your old and new suppliers. And we’re always here to help you through the switching process.

If your switch request is rejected (this is usually due to an outstanding balance), we can help you work with your old supplier to resolve any issues. Once your switch is accepted, the hard work is done, and the new supplier will handle the remaining details.

But your suppliers may need more information from you, so look out for any letters or emails.

Why switch business gas and electricity suppliers?

Switching business energy suppliers can lead to significant savings, particularly if you’re not on a fixed tariff. Many businesses unknowingly roll onto their supplier's more expensive out-of-contract rates after their initial contract ends.

Similarly, if you move into new premises without sorting out a new contract, you'll be on the deemed rates set by that property's supplier. These rates are also more expensive than fixed rates. Here are other reasons to consider switching:

  • Lower costs: By comparing quotes, you can find cheap business gas and electricity suppliers that can provide better rates.
  • Better service: Customer service varies widely between providers. If you’re unhappy with your current supplier's support, switching could result in better customer experiences.
  • Greener energy: You may find suppliers offering renewable energy tariffs, which can help reduce your carbon footprint.

Ultimately, the goal is to find the best business energy suppliers that fit your budget and your company's energy needs.

How much could your business save by switching energy suppliers?

The potential savings from switching depend on your business size, energy consumption, and operational efficiency.

Small businesses can particularly benefit from finding the best business electricity suppliers to lower their average small business electricity bill. Larger businesses with higher energy needs will also benefit from comparing rates to ensure they're not paying more than necessary.

While it’s hard to predict exact savings, switching to a fixed tariff could help cut your monthly bill significantly, compared to the rates you’d pay if you stayed on your supplier’s out-of-contract rates.

What happens when you switch business energy suppliers?

Switching your business energy supplier can feel like a big task, but with Bionic, we make the process straightforward. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of what to expect:

  • Sign the contract - Signing your contract is the first step. Typically, we use DocuSign for quick and easy online signing. This speeds things up as there's no need for physical paperwork. You review the contract, agree to the terms, and sign electronically. Make sure to download a copy for your records.
  • Internal quality check - After you sign, we double-check all details to ensure everything meets the supplier’s requirements. If something’s missing or incorrect, we’ll let you know right away.
  • Summary of your contract - Once everything’s sorted, we’ll email a summary of your new contract to you, so you have all the details.
  • Submit a recent bill - Send us a copy of your latest business energy bill to confirm the end date of your current contract. This ensures your new contract starts on time, without any overlapping issues or unnecessary out-of-contract charges.
  • Approval from both suppliers - Both your old and new suppliers will carry out checks before confirming the switch. While most switches go smoothly, around 20% of customers can face issues such as:
    • Incorrect information about your business or energy meters
    • Unpaid bills with your current supplier
    • Wrong start date for the new contract

If anything goes wrong, we'll let you know and help to resolve the issue.

  • Send a final meter reading - Once approved, you need to submit a final meter reading. This ensures your current supplier provides an accurate final bill.

And that’s it – your new contract will go live on the agreed start date! Keep in mind that it could be a few months until your new contract kicks in, depending on when your old one ends.

What happens after the switch?

Your new supplier will send your first bill within 4-8 weeks after your contract goes live. Don't worry – we’ll send you a guide to help you understand the bill when it arrives.

While the process is usually simple, here are a few additional factors to keep in mind:

  • Smart meter installation: If your new supplier requires a smart meter, you may need to schedule installation before your contract starts.
  • Moving Business Premises: If you're relocating, switching works a little differently. Check out our guide on switching energy when moving your business
  • Supplier not on our panel: If your new supplier isn’t on our panel, you’ll need to notify them about the switch. If they are on our panel, we'll handle the communication.
  • Owing money: Suppliers can block switches if you owe money. It’s important to clear any outstanding bills before switching to avoid delays. If you’re struggling to pay your energy bills, get in touch with your supplier to set up a repayment plan.

Switching your business energy supplier can save you money and improve your service, so don't hesitate to get started today!

How long does it take to switch business energy suppliers?

This depends on the size of your business. If you run a micro business, then your switch should take no longer than five days. For all other businesses, it can take up to 30 days.

But remember, if you still have a contract with your current supplier, the switch won’t happen until this current contract ends.

Switching business energy suppliers can lead to substantial savings and better service. Whether you’re looking for the best business electricity supplier or seeking to reduce your business gas bills, taking the time to compare commercial energy providers can pay off.

Consider using a business energy broker to help you navigate the options available, ensuring that you find the best electricity supplier for small businesses or any other tailored energy deal that suits your needs.

How to complain about your energy supplier

When complaining about your energy supplier, remember that you are the customer. This means you are well within your rights to contact your energy provider with a complaint. Even if you’re not sure whether you should be complaining, you can still ask questions and raise your issue.

You can phone, email, or write to your supplier. If you phone, note the date, time, and supplier representative you spoke to. If you write, make sure you get proof of postage when you send the letter. If you email, it might be worth including a read receipt.

When contacting your energy supplier, describe your problem as clearly as possible. It’s also worth stating how you expect the problem to be solved.

If your problem isn’t solved to your liking, you can escalate the complaint.

How to escalate energy supplier complaints

If you haven’t had a viable solution or response to an energy supplier complaint, there are other services available to help you resolve your problem. If your energy supplier has ignored your attempts to contact them, or the solution they’ve suggested isn’t suitable, you can contact Citizens Advice or your local Ombudsman service.

Citizens Advice offers free and impartial advice on rights and responsibilities. For energy supply complaints, they can inform you of both the rights you have but also the legal responsibilities of your energy supplier. This is a great service to use if you are unsure about a complaint to your gas or electricity supplier.

If your supplier hasn’t resolved your complaint within eight weeks or you’ve received a deadlock letter, you can escalate your complaint to the Energy Ombudsman service. This is a free and independent service which is there to ensure you get the support you need with your energy supplier complaints.

The Ombudsman can force your energy provider to respond to your complaints, correct problems, apologise for poor service and even provide compensation. When complaints against energy suppliers have not been resolved, this is a great place to go.
