Top five family cars

From fuel efficiency to space for the buggy, from low insurance costs to safety in an accident, these cars tick all the right boxes when it comes to family driving…

When it comes to searching for family cars, there is no shortage of options; from compact hatchbacks to large 4x4’s, curvaceous crossovers to enormous estates.

But if you’re not sure what’s right for you, we’ve rounded up five of the best and most diverse options out there.

Ford Focus

We start with the Ford Focus, the car that reshaped what became the traditional family car market.

Its combination of stylish design, excellent engines and superb driving dynamics made it all the car any family could ever need.

Over time the Focus has evolved and although the competition has caught up, it still remains a popular choice.

KIA Sportage

For years, Korean cars had a bad press and rightly so; they weren’t well built, the engines weren’t particularly strong and the build quality was shocking.

Things all changed in the mid noughties though when the company started focusing on the European market.

Cars like the KIA Sportage evolved from a small SUV to stylish crossover and started competing against more established rivals who struggled to match KIA’s 7 year 100,000 mile warranty.

Range Rover Sport

Those who prefer a more premium feel to their family runabout are catered for too with cars like the Range Rover Sport.

Spacious, comfortable, crammed with all manner of technological wizardry that will get you far into the back and beyond, while being cosseted in leather with heated seats and all manner of entertainment.

Be warned though – all those electronic gadgets come with a hefty price tag and strong running costs.

Skoda Superb Estate

If space is high up your  list of must-haves then the Skoda Superb Estate is definitely worth a look.

Ever since Skoda joined the Volkswagon family, it has taken full advantage of the excellent engines and strong build quality, yet still manages to maintain its value for money philosophy in a package that’s considerably more spacious than its closest rivals.

The Superb Estate is a perfect example of this with over 1865 litres of boot space, more than enough for the modern family – and the kitchen sink.

Seat Alhambra

The last car to feature in our round up of family favourites is the Seat Alhambra, the affordable 7 seater that transforms from people carrier to spacious load lugger in seconds thanks to 5 rear seats that fold flat into the floor.

As well as its obvious practical benefits, it’s surprisingly good to drive and affordable when lined up against similarly sized rivals.
