Q&A: What does Phones 4u closure mean for you?

Phones 4u, the high-street mobile phone retailer, has today announced the closure of all 720 of its outlets - putting 5,596 jobs at risk. The news comes following decisions made by the UK’s biggest mobile networks to withdraw their business.

The closures were confirmed when EE, Phones 4u’s last remaining mobile operator supplier, severed its ties with the retailer. The move followed a similar decision by Vodafone.

So what does this mean for you as a customer? Here are answers to your questions…

Why has Phones 4u closed its doors?

Although Phones 4u still has plenty of cash in the bank – last year it cleared a profit of £105million –EE’s decision to withdraw its business comes on the back of similar decisions by O2, Three and Vodafone and leaves the company with no major mobile partners.

The decision on whether the company will start trading again is now in the hands of the administrators.

Will my mobile phone contract bought through Phones 4u be affected?

In a word, no. The company says all existing mobile phone contracts will be honoured as the decision to close the Phones 4u branches will not affect the services provided by the mobile networks.

Remember your contract is with your network (Three, EE, Vodafone etc) not with Phones 4U directly, as such customer payments can still be made as normal.

Although doors on the high street are closing, business won’t cease for at least a year. Phones 4u has stated that that any monthly discount deals will also be honoured.

What about my mobile phone insurance policy?

If you took out mobile phone insurance with Phones 4u this will still be honoured. You will still be able to claim for lost, stolen or damaged phones by calling 0844 8710535.

I’ve ordered a phone from Phones 4u. Will I ever see it?

That depends on whether your phone was ordered and dispatched before the closures were announced. Phones already been dispatched will arrive and can be used as normal.

If the phone hasn’t been dispatched, your order will be cancelled and you will be refunded the full amount.

What if I ordered the new iPhone 6 from Phones 4u?

If you’ve ordered an iPhone 6 then you’ll be refunded because your phone has not yet been dispatched.

I’m looking for a new mobile phone deal – what do I do now?

Gautam Srivastava, MoneySuperMarket’s communications expert, said: “You can still get a mobile phone deal on the high street – there are thousands of outlets around the UK you can pop into to pick up your shiny new handset. And, of course, you can shop for a phone right here at MoneySuperMarket.

“If you shop on the high street, remember that an EE store only has EE deals, Vodafone and Three likewise. And you’re only ever going to get a snapshot of the deals available from these retailers, so for a full picture do your research and read reviews online before you buy.

“Then when you’ve got the handset you want, check here for the best deal.”
