Love is in the air if you’re heading to Spain this summer

Have you ever had a holiday romance? If so, you’re in good company.

Our latest research has revealed that a quarter of Brits have found love on holiday, with Spain being the most romantic destination of all.

Head to Europe for love

Europe was found to be the most romantic continent, with over two-thirds (72%) of foreign flings taking place in the European summertime.

Spain was the most popular destination for lovers to meet, with 27% of summer romances happening in the setting of sun, sea and sangria.

Other amorous destinations for falling in love (or lust) included Italy, Greece, France and Germany.

Film inspiration

With a host of much-loved rom-coms set in romantic spots in and around Europe, it’s hardly surprising that Brits find their equivalent of Javier Bardem in Spain (Vicki Cristina Barcelona), Colin Firth in Greece (Mamma Mia) or Marion Cotillard in France (Midnight in Paris) while on holiday in these charming locations.

In comparison, only 7% of those surveyed found love stateside and just 6% had found love while on an Asian adventure.

Perhaps romantic inspiration from the likes of Dirty Dancing and Grease wasn’t enough to encourage some summer loving for Brits heading across the pond.

A short-term fling

But holiday romances don’t appear to be quite so rosy when returning home.

The average length of a holiday romance was found to be around nine months, with almost one in 10 (9%) failing to make it past the aeroplane journey home.

One in 20 romances came to a swift end when realising the spark had faded quicker than their tans, while a sneaky 10% called off their overseas dalliance due to already being in a relationship.

It’s not all doom and gloom, however. One in 10 holiday romances flourished for over two years once they were back on British soil.

Don’t forget your travel insurance

While some Brits are keen to forget their foreign flirtations, one thing to keep at the forefront of your next trip away is getting the right travel insurance.

Travel insurance won’t mend a broken heart but can ensure that any luggage lost at the ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ or any other unexpected mishaps won’t result in an expensive holiday hangover.
