With the mobile phone market having such a quick turn-around in new products, it’s not always straightforward to know what to do when it comes to buying a new phone.
The first step is to shop around to compare the costs of handsets, mobile packages and SIM-only deals from the different networks.
In the past, Apple increased the cost of its phones each year, with key competitors such as Samsung offering cheaper smartphones with on-par tech features and capability.
This time however, Apple’s new entry-level iPhone Xr has been priced lower than its predecessors, with a price tag starting at £750. To keep the costs down, Apple have featured some less-advanced tech alongside some of its latest innovations.
iPhone XS and XS Max
If it’s the latest, fastest mobile technology you want, then the XS and XS Max have a lot to offer.
Impressive displays (5.8 inch and 6.5 inch respectively) and dual-sim technology are just some of the latest features. Prices for the handsets start at £999 for the XS and £1,099 for XS Max in 64GB configurations.
At 512GB, the prices are £1,349 and £1,449. Colours are gold, silver and space grey.
Buying with a contract
If you prefer not to buy the handset from Apple (and use it with a SIM-only deal) you can buy it on contract from a mobile phone network.
Our current top pick for the iPhone XS 64GB, for example, is with O2 - you pay £410 up front, then £34 a month for 24 months, giving a total cost of £1,226.
For this, you get 15GB of 4G data a month and unlimited calls and texts.
To get a phone without a three-figure up front charge, you’ll be looking at monthly payments of over £60 a month. Check out the deals here.
Buying the phone out-right
Buying a new phone outright means coughing up the cash in one lump-sum, but you will then benefit from cheaper monthly tariff payments with a network provider on a SIM-only deal.
With iPhones costing the thick end of £1,000 or more, one option is to buy it with an interest-free purchase credit card. You can then spread the cost over the length of the card deal. Just try to clear the debt before the interest-free period comes to an end.
How to recycle your old phone
One option if you’re looking to get rid of your current mobile, is to recycle it. This simple process works by you sending your phone, getting it reviewed, and then get the cash. See how much you could get for your phone by checking out our mobile recycling comparison tool.
You can still recycle your phone even if it’s broken, but this will mean you’ll receive less money for it.
