It’s not too late for a New Year break

Christmas shopping may almost be over for another year but, if you haven’t already made plans for New Year celebrations, you may be starting to panic. We give advice on how to find a last-minute holiday deal as well as offering some destination inspiration.

A recent poll on MoneySupermarket showed that one in four people hope to receive a holiday as a Christmas present, so why not wow a loved one and take them away for New Year? Or, rather than paying an extortionate amount for tickets to your local nightclub and spending half the night queuing up for drinks, why not invest your money in a few days away and turn up to work refreshed after the festive break?

There are still great deals out there to be snapped up, so follow our advice to find the ideal break for you at the best price.

Consider all of the options

Even if you know exactly where you want to go for New Year, you could save money by considering all of the options.

Self-catering cottage breaks can work out really well for groups of friends as having your own accommodation gives you the flexibility of being able to cook a big meal on New Year’s Eve and buying all of your own drinks in for the celebrations.

However, if cooking for yourself and shopping for supplies sounds too much like hard work, booking an all-inclusive package holiday could be the answer. And an all-inclusive break can often work out as the cheapest option as you can save pounds in extras such as drinks.

If you want to spend New Year abroad, compare the price of flights with other methods of transport such as the Eurostar and ferries. And, if you can, be flexible with the time of day that you travel as travelling at unsociable hours of the day can result in great savings.

Beware of false economies

When looking for last-minute breaks, it can be tempting to snap up offers that seem too good to be true. Before you rush into booking a five-star hotel “near the city centre”, check that the accommodation is in the area that you want to be in. Staying 25 miles outside of Edinburgh and paying inflated New Year’s Eve taxi prices to and from the Hogmanay celebrations could actually be more expensive than paying slightly more to stay slap bang in the centre of the city.
