iPhone 6 and Apple Watch: 47 fast facts

The iPhone and long-awaited Apple Watch were officially shown off to the public in a conference at the tech giant’s California headquarters last night.

Here are 47 things we learned…

      The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

  1. There are two new iPhone handsets to choose from – the iPhone 6 and larger iPhone 6 Plus.
  2. Its curved design is “edgeless”, says head honcho Tim Cook.
  3. Both are thinner than the iPhone 5s.
  4. Both have new, high definition Retina displays.
  5. The screens use ion-strengthened glass.
  6. The iPhone 6 screen measure 4.7”, the iPhone 6 Plus comes in at 5.5”.
  7. Screen resolutions are 1334x750 pixels (326ppi) and 1920x1080 pixels (401ppi), respectively.
  8. The iPhone 6 is 6.9mm thick. The ‘Plus’ is 7.1mm thick.
  9. There’s a new landscape mode for the home screen, like that of the iPad tablet.
  10. They feature the new A8 64-bit processor. It provides 25% faster processing, 50% faster graphics.
  11. They feature the new M8 coprocessor for interpreting motion data.
  12. They have an in-built barometer to measure air pressure and elevation. The information is used by the new…
  13. Health app, which offers a suite of health tracking features.
  14. The handsets allow for wifi calling, in case you have no signal.
  15. The cameras are still 8Megapixels, but with an improved iSight camera.
  16. Camera now has faster auto focus.
  17. Focus pixels only usually found on professional Digital SLR cameras included.
  18. iPhone 6 has digital image stabilisation, iPhone 6 Plus has optical stabilisation.
  19. iPhone 6 starts at £539 (for a 16GB model).
  20. Handsets come in gold, silver and space grey.
  21. iPhone 6 Plus starts at £619.
  22. Each is also available in 64GB and 128GB versions.
  23. iOS8, the handset’s OS, launches on September 17.
  24. ApplePay introduces mobile payments via contactless NFC tech.
  25. NFC uses fingerprint-scanning touch ID to verify payments.
  26. ApplePay is "easy, secure and private", says Apple.
  27. You can add a new card by taking a picture of it with the camera and verifying with your bank.
  28. ApplePay only available in US at launch.
  29. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will launch on September 19.

    Apple Watch

  30. The ‘iWatch’ is official, but called Apple Watch.
  31. It’s heavily customisable.
  32. It comes in two sizes, three finishes and with many different strap styles.
  33. A ‘digital crown’ controls the Apple Watch. Turning it gets translated into digital information by the device.
  34. Screen is strong, sapphire glass.
  35. Screen is touch and pressure sensitive.
  36. Voice-activated Siri personal assistant included.
  37. Notifications make the watch vibrate. Raising your wrist makes them appear on screen.
  38. It has a proprietary ‘digital touch’ communications app.
  39. It has a dedicated digital touch button.
  40. It reads texts, understands them and generates auto-responses for you to choose from.
  41. You can dictate replies by speaking.
  42. Apple Watch has no keyboard.
  43. Familiar apps will be available (music, maps, Facebook etc).
  44. Apple Watch requires a paired iPhone.
  45. Charges wirelessly.
  46. Will release in early 2015.
  47. Will start at $349 in the US. There’s no word on UK release or pricing yet.
