Gayner Potts: Children’s car seats are an important and legal requirement up to the age of 12 years old.

So, if you are looking to buy, here are a few things you need to know:

Do your research

There are a variety of seats to choose from, in different categories, these will depend on the age and the weight of your child.

Starting with our infant carriers that will go from birth up to 15 months, or 13kg in weight.

The next stage will be a forward facing car seat, which will go from approximately 15 months up to 4 years of age, or your child is 18kg in weight.

We offer combination car seats, which can be used from birth up to 15 months or 13kg, these seats can then be turned round to become forward facing until your child is approximately 4 years old.

Also available are child seats that will take your child from approximately 15 months up to 12 years old.

Finally we offer high back boosters that will take your child up to the age of 12 years old or 4ft 5’’ in height. These will be used using the seatbelt in your car.

Forward or rear-facing?

It is a legal requirement for you to carry your child in a rear-facing infant carrier, from birth up to the age of 15 months or 29lbs in weight, although, it is illegal to use a rear facing infant carrier in the front seat of your car if you have an active airbag, however, in a lot of modern cars you are able to disable the airbags with a key or a button provided, but it is always best to check your manufacturers handbook.

Be wary of buying used

We strongly recommend not to buy, or use, a second hand car seat because you don’t know whether it has been involved in a collision.

What is ISOFIX?

ISOFIX is an anchoring system that connects the car seat rigidly to the chassis of the car and is available on many modern cars.

An alternative to ISOFIX are child seats that are fitting using the seat belt of your car. Although these seats are cheaper than ISOFIX, figures so that up to 70% of seat belted seats are fitted incorrectly, but here at Mother Care, we have experts that make sure you are getting the correct car seat for your car and that you are comfortable fitting it.
