In our first video battle Spain takes on Turkey…

Round one: The beaches

How can you resist the beaches in Spain? More than 500 of them have Blue Flag awards and stretches of sand in resorts such as Marbella, Alcudia and Playa Blanca are perfect to sunbathe and relax on.

Turkey’s beaches are also spectacular! Almost 400 of them have a Blue Flag award too and how can destinations such as Olu Deniz, Fethiye and Marmaris fail to tempt you to book a holiday?

Round two: The weather

In summer, Spain sizzles with temperatures reaching 30C in the Costa Blanca in August. And the Canary Islands enjoy year-round sun. Just imagine being in Puerto Pollensa to top up your tan!

Turkey is also toasty over the summer months with temperatures in Bodrum peaking in the mid-30s in July. I’d love to be placing my beach towel in that spot.

Round three: Flight times

You can get to parts of Spain in as little as two hours from the UK and flights jet off from more than 20 airports. The longest flights to the country are around four and a half hours – so it’s the perfect destination if you’re looking for a hassle-free holiday!

The flights to Turkey take slightly longer with times starting at just under four hours from the UK – but the resorts are more than worth the wait!

Round four: The food

Tapas, fresh fish, amazing meats and cheeses, and local specialities such as mojo potatoes… the Spaniards take their food and meal times very seriously!

Mezzes with dishes including houmous and stuffed vine leaves, fresh fish, kebabs, and tempting sweet treats such as baklava – you’ll return from your holiday inspired to cook some of the dishes you sampled yourself.

Round five: The culture

From admiring Gaudi’s fantastical creations in Barcelona to watching a traditional flamenco show or partying hard at a Spanish fiesta, you certainly won’t be bored in Spain. And I can’t forget to mention sights such as the stunning Alhambra Palace in Granada.

Istanbul – the only city sitting in two continents – has must-sees such as the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sofia, while visiting ancient sites such as Pamukkale will be the highlight of your holiday. And whirling dervish dance performances and folk music shouldn’t be missed.

Round six: Value for money

In the Post Office’s annual report on holiday costs, Spain persistently takes one of the top spots for value for money for a basket of items including a three-course evening meal and a bottle of beer. This year it came third beating destinations such as Greece, Portugal and Cyprus.

But Turkey actually came second in the Post Office’s report this year narrowly pipping Spain to the post. This was due to the pound soaring in value compared to the Lira.

So, where gets your vote? Spain or Turkey?
