The delight of getting the keys to the door can be tempered by the stress of the move and the home-buying process.
To make life a little easier for you, we asked estate agents for their top tips…
Don’t panic view or buy
It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of buying a home, especially if your agent is telling you to move fast or miss out.
The reality, though, is that less than 10% of homes on the market are sold within the first month, so there’s rarely a need to rush in. So take your time, do your research and consider your options.
Don’t take the asking price as a sign of what a property is worth
Sellers want the best price possible, and some agents will tell them what they want to hear to get them signed up. So make sure you take a look around the area to get a good idea of whether an asking price is fair – and trust your own judgement!
Show agents you are a serious buyer
If you want to make sure you’re first on the list of those called when your dream home comes on the market, show the agent you’re ready to go.

The best way to do this is to get a mortgage agreed in principle before you start house-hunting – this will also give you a realistic budget.
Be on the front foot with agents
You may need to make the running when it comes to being kept informed of new properties on the market. Keep in touch with agents – a weekly phone call to estate agents will go a long way to helping you secure your dream home.
Don’t believe everything you’re told
Agents may not always be forthcoming about bad neighbours, noise from a nearby pub and other not-so-desirable features of a property. So check things out for yourself –visit the pub around closing time.
